Storyline 2: Quiz's randomly not working

Apr 11, 2017

So I am new to using Articulate Storyline, but have been tasked with re-designing a training course for a contract I am working on. I have used a few other applications previously so I am not entirely new.

To test out the functionality of how I want the course setup and how everything will work with the SLK LMS, I created a basic skeleton testing course while building the slides for the main course in another file.

The course will have a few welcome slides, navigation etc. Then a Main menu slide that will be a master results slide. There will be 7 modules, each with their own quizzes and results slide. The master slide will show complete when each of the 7 other results slides show min 80%.

My issue though is that it seems like randomly quizzes will not work. They will not allow you to select the answers and will have a next/prev button instead of a submit button. I have also noticed that from the menu slide if I just start off by clicking the retry quiz button, the quizzes then work correctly every time.

Is there something I am missing for the setup of this?

Also, any thoughts on the layout or any issues you see I might come across?

As far as navigation, I am still needing to take away some access for some of the slides. I want everything to be accessed through the menu slide.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi Rich not sure I understand this comment.

Using a QB you should be able to set the random draw of questions.  The Next and Prev buttons will appear if you are allowing the user to review the quiz or if you have set it so that they submit all answers at the end.

When I preview my course and page through the content when I come up to the quiz questions it continues to act like a normal page. I cannot click on an answer for the question, only click prev or next. Once you get to the end of the quiz it scores it as a 0.

However, if from the menu I click on retry quiz right from the start and sometimes randomly when I am paging through, the quiz questions act like a quiz, allow me to select an answer and have a submit button instead of a next/prev button.

Hi Rich!  I had a look at your project, and I think it's a really cool idea how you've leveraged your Main Menu slide to show the quiz scores and allow your users to revisit quizzes and modules.

The one thing that jumped out at me, however, was that your learners are landing on a master results slide before they ever take a quiz.  I had a hunch that this was interfering with the ability to properly take the quiz.  The results slides default to submitting the result information to the LMS when the timeline starts, and so every time learners land on the main menu slide, that "new" results information was being submitted.

You could probably engineer some super complicated variable system to make the results slide work as a main menu slide, but I wanted to do a quick and easy fix to get you going in the right direction.  I added a new slide and copied over all of the elements from your original menu slide and just deleted the trigger to submit the 2.1 results.  I also changed the Complete Course button trigger to now link to your original menu slide.

So using a plain slide as the main menu slide will still allow the references to the quiz scores and the buttons to revisit modules and retake quizzes, but without interfering with actual scoring and submitting the results to the LMS.

That'll start you off...if you want to add some "You've finished" messaging or polish up the end, have at it!  :)

Crystal, thank you so much. That makes sense as to why its happening.

I noticed looking at your version, if I click the complete course button that takes them to the master result slide it breaks the quizzes in preview. And we all know learners will click the button just because its there.

Would it be better to have a button that changes state after the scores for all 3 score percents are >= 80%  or is there a different method that may work better to get to the Master Results slide at the end?
