Storyline 3: Using HTML Formatting Tags in Text Variables

Jan 02, 2020

I need to be able to format part of the text in a text variable in italics. I have read this article 'Storyline 3: Using HTML Formatting Tags in Text Variables' which explains how to format text variables, this works when you are displaying the variable on the page using %variable1% but I need to set the value of a TextEntry box equal to the value of a text variable (for copying and pasting by the user). When I do this the html tags are displayed.

I want users to be able to copy the elements and format of a reference. For example:

Author, A.B. (Year). Title. (Edition.). Place of publication: Publisher.

I have solved the copy and paste bit of the problem using TextEntry but as yet haven't come across a way of formatting the text. Any suggestions?

Thanks

It's the format that I need to change, so in the example below it is just the word 'title' that I need to have in italics. I can do this if I was displaying the text variable in a normal text box but I need it to be displayed in a TextEntry box so that the end user can copy and paste the exact format. The textEntry box doesn't read the HTML tags, it just displays the tags as if they are part of the text.

Author, A.B. (Year). Title. (Edition.). Place of publication: Publisher.

I can achieve what I need by embedding a web object but this will mean I have to create about 50 individual web pages for embedding. I was hoping for a solution within Storyline.
