I have a long rectangular image with 4 icons set against a white background. When I place the image into SL360 and add 5 states, 20%, 40%, 60%, ...etc. using the CROP feature and then play my slide weirdly it only displays the white background, none of the icons come up, even though on the state editor I can see them visible in the cropping.

Please try to do one thing select the white BG in state and then right click and send it back.
