Storyline crashing when saving a screen recording

Jul 24, 2014

Hello,

Storyline is consistently crashing when I try to save a screen recording. The message I receive is "Articulate Storyline has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program."

I've read through past post threads to locate an answer and have been left stumped. Here's information that may help you experts guide me in the right direction.

  • I have admin rights
  • The software was installed about a month ago
  • I was screencasting up until about a week ago with no issues
  • I'm up to date with upgrade patches
  • I have not tried an uninstall and reinstall
  • My project does not have any special characters in the file name

I have tried the following:

  • Saving to a different location
  • Using a coworker's device to do the screenrecording (same error displayed)
  • Recording a different screen in case the issue was with the site I was recording.

Let me know if you have any additional advice or if an uninstall/reinstall is the answer.

Thanks!

Maisha

Hi Maisha,

Welcome to the community!

You mentioned that you've already checked the file names and moved the file(s), but please confirm that you're working locally:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Before moving on to troubleshooting the installation, i recommend starting a new, blank Storyline project. If you see the same behavior in the new project, you'll wan to continue with the steps below. If you do not have the same issue in a new file, it may be something specific to that project that's causing the crash when you attempt to record. If that's the case, we'll want to look at the .story file.

If you're already working locally with your Storyline project files and you've updated, it may help to run a quick repair:

If running the repair does not solve the problem, please try following the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article:

Please let us know how it goes!
