Storyline File Types

Aug 19, 2014

I'm new to Storyline and I have 4 questions.

1) I'd like to know all of the file types that are available for my Storyline files.

2) Several folks in my org tell me that I can only publish Storyline files to Articulate Online or another LMS. How do others host storyline content outside of an LMS?

3) If it's true that Storyline requires that a group of "packets" be sent to the hosting solution instead of a single file, how big is the hassle factor of dealing with packets?

4) Is it true that accessing Storyline modules on a tablet requires that the learner download an Articulate app.

Hi Jean and welcome to Heroes!

1. While working in Storyline you'll see the file type appear as a .story file. When you publish you'll see within the published output folder a number of files generated and the specifics will depend on how you publish. For example, if you publish for web with the HTML5 option enabled you'll see a story.html and a story_html5.html file included. If you publish for CD you'll you'll see another file called Launch_Story.exe.

2. There are a number of publishing options for Storyline, and which one you choose will depend ultimately on how the course will be deployed:

Publishing a Project for Web

Publishing a Project for Articulate Online

Publishing a Project for LMS

Publishing a Project for CD or Another Local Source

Publishing a Project for Word

3. Yes, Storyline publishes a number of files, all which must be uploaded or sent to the hosting solution. When you publish you'll see a publish successfully window with options to share the files via email, ftp or create a zip file.

4. If you'd like to access Storyline on an iPad, you'll have the option of using our mobile player app or the HTML5 output as described here. There are some features that will work better in the app vs. HTML5 deployment, so you may want to review the comparison chart here.

Hope that helps!
