Storyline file Updates produce Special Characters?

Sep 12, 2023

Hello there,

We are in the process of updating courses built in Storyline that are still relevant to our audience. Some of our courses were published in 2016 - much older version of Storyline, of course.

In the older version, currently published in our LMS, displays as intended:

We recently upgraded this file to Storyline 360 and published in Review 360 to address as a team. But, we cannot review it due to the special characters that display.

This is how the current version of this same course displays:

Screenshot of modern player and same page of course displayed above - special characters throughout

These characters are embedded in the text throughout the entire project, but you don't see them until the project is published.

Attempts to edit the characters out has not been productive. Attempts to create new textboxes has not been productive.

RECOMMENDATIONS?

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hi Molly!

It sounds like you're having some issues with the fonts in your course after upgrading to Storyline 360. I'd be happy to help and have some follow-up questions to start.

  • Which fonts are you experiencing the issue with?
    • Can you test the behavior using a standard font like Arial to help determine if the issue is font-specific?
  • Does this behavior occur regardless of the browser being used?

With your permission, I'd like to take a closer look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it here in the discussion or privately through a support case. We'll delete it from our system as soon as we're finished!

Hello Steven,

Before you replied, I reviewed others who posted about "special characters." Their recommendation was to update to a different font. The one most noted was Arial.

With this slight tweak, the special characters are gone.

The project was built with Gill Sans MT. This font style is in your current list of available fonts. I'm not sure if this was an imported font for the original project or if it was in your original list of fonts as well. However, it is clear that the conversion "squeeze" from the early version to SL 360 was a little bumpy! ;-)

Thanks for responding and verifying the solution!

Hi Molly,

I'm glad to hear that the special characters are gone by changing the font to Arial! You did well with researching the solution, and I'm also happy that Steven was able to verify the fix.

If you need help with anything else, please let us know here in the E-Learning Heroes Community or privately in a support case. We'll be happy to assist you!
