Submit Text Interaction Not Working

Apr 12, 2016

Hello,

I built a system training with a practice activity (Try mode). Everything was working fine -- I published it and uploaded it to the LMS. However, when I opened the file (version 3) later to update it with new content, I discovered that the slides in the Try mode requiring text entry are no longer working. I checked the previous version of the file (version 2) and found that it is also not working. However, when I opened the file previous to this version (version 1), I found it working fine. (I can't use this version because it is not updated).

Issue: Submit Text Entry Interaction not working

After you type in the text and click enter (or click the submit button), nothing happens so I cannot move to the next slide.

Note:

  1. I compared the settings/triggers between version 3 and version 1 -- exactly the same. Why is it working in one and not in the other? I am attaching a screen image. I had to blur out the main page but I am showing the Triggers. The red box that you see on the main page is where you type the text Dummy123456.
  2. System runs in Chrome. I cannot run it in IE as required by my client.

What could be the issue here? Is there a missing trigger?

Thanks.

Hi Tina,

If it was working in the first version, I'd also suspect something changed in between - did you perhaps upgrade to a new version/update of Storyline? Did you move the file's location and/or open it from a network or shared drive?

Also you mentioned that the user would type "Dummy123456" was that just sample text for us here? As your slide title is named something different "Type SN987654" and if you've changed what they may need to type that could be tripping you up as well.

I suspect since you blurred out a part of the image, that you're unable to share it with us here in the forums? If you're able to share it privately you can send it along to me here - and feel free to just include a few representative slides (I don't need the entire recording).

Thanks Wendy and Ashley for responding.

Wendy, I added a text box but I don't know how to assign the variable reference to it.

Ashley, I did not update Storyline and I did not move its location. I am also working on it from my local drive.

I attached the wrong frame, although the triggers are the same. I have several slides that are like this and all are not working. Anyway, I am attaching here the correct frame. I will try to put together a few of these slides that I can share with you privately. I will send it to you as soon as I can. Can you send me the link to where I can send it to you?

I do want to find the solution for this so that I will know what to do next time.

Thanks a lot!

Tina

Hi Tina

select the textbox you added then click the Insert tab > Reference option. A list of your variables should display and you can select TextEntry53.

As you type into the text entry box and click submit, whatever you enter should appear in your added textbox.

Here is a quick video to show you what I mean...it's just a good way of testing that your variables are returning what you think they should.

Hello all:

Apologies for my delayed response.

Thanks Ashley for your offer to look into my material. Unfortunately, I cannot send it (or a portion of it) to you. My colleague and I were able to solve the issue.

Thanks Wendy for your suggestion. I was unable to use it though, in my simulation. I managed to replicate the steps you indicated but it's not applicable to my simulation.

So here is our work-around:

  1. From the Insert tab, click Remove Freeform.
  2. Remove the existing text entry box.
  3. From the Insert tab, click Convert to Freeform. Select Text entry.
  4. In Form View, type the correct answer.
  5. Adjust the settings in the Display and Setting depending on your preference. I set mine to: Feedback (None), Attempts (1).
  6. Switch to Slide View. A text box appears at the top of the page. Move it to the spot where the user/learner will need to type their answer.
  7. Format the text box. Remove "type your text here". Remove Shape Fill and Shape Outline.
  8. If you have a hint caption, add trigger to have it shown when the mouse is hovered over the text entry.

This is all I had to do. Hope this will help other designers in the future.

Thanks.

I have the same issue - and I think I discovered what the problem is.  I always allow unrestricted navigation in the menu when I'm testing the lesson, but then for final publish I restrict the menu navigation.  As soon as I restrict the navigation, none of the text entry interactions work any more.  It would be great if this could be fixed.  For now, I will leave navigation set to 'free' so I don't have to delete and recreate all the text interactions in the 'try' mode.

Christie Pollack wrote to my work email:

"Would it be possible to share just the story file. I am not able to open
what was provided on my end to see if I am able to reproduce the behavior
you are reporting."

Perhaps my work email is changing something, so I am sending the story file
directly from the computer I used to create it using my personal email
account.

Thanks for your help on this,

Hi, Carole -- Thanks for your reply, and although it appears that the zipped file you shared previously ends with .story, after I downloaded and extracted the contents, it does not contain just the .story (or working project file) that I was hoping to see. If you could reattach just that file, it would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I think there may have been an additional miscommunication, or your reply intended for another party was posted here in error (see above for the message about a meeting at 6 pm). I just wanted to mention so that you may resend to the intended recipient!  :)

And one other thing to note: when you reply to a forum notification via email, the details in your email signature are displayed publicly here in the post. If you would like to remove that information, please use the EDIT button beneath your post. Or to remove the entire reply sent in error, you would use the DELETE button.

And yes, as Wendy mentioned, if you reply via email, any attachments you intended to share will not transmit to be accessible here in the thread. Please click here to be taken to the actual thread, and use the ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom left of the reply box to browse for your .story file and upload from there.

Hope that helps! :)

Hi, Carole -- I appreciate your patience while I took a look at your file and I am running into similar difficulties, so I think it would be helpful if our Support Engineers were able to take a closer look. I will go ahead and submit a ticket on your behalf and I plan to follow along with their progress so that I am able to share updates here in the thread for others who are following along.
