You could place a shape over the top of the data entry field, and use a trigger hide/show it. That would block users from typing into the field. However, the field will automatically gain focus as soon as the slide starts and allow typing.
Another option is to place the text entry box on the base layer and create a layer. Make sure "Prevent the user from clicking on the base layer" in the Slide Layer Properties is checked and interacting with the entry box will be blocked.

Thank you for the suggestions Christian. Hiding and showing rectangles should work for my project.
I'm also thinking that having built in triggers or being able to add states to data entry boxes would be a great addition to SL.
