The possible cause for this is the ability to undock "Timeline", "States" and "Notes." If you double click on one of them, they undock and you can move them around. It is possible the timeline is undocked and is just somewhere out of view.
To restore them all back 1.) Click on view. 2.) Click on re-dock all windows.
