TopBar buttons disappear when published

Hi there, Nick.  I used a sample course, and I was able to retain my top bar player features in Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer.  I tested both Flash and HTML5 output.

Could you provide a link to your output for testing?  If you can attach your .story file to the discussion, that would be great for me to have a look, too!

Hi Crystal. Much obliged for your response and sample course. Sorry for delay in replying, I've been training and then a local power cut!

I have done some more investigation following on from your sample. The issue seems to be linked to the use of the file name being displayed or not. 

• If the title is displayed, it seems the top tool bar resources show
• If the title is not displayed, either the full top tool bar shows until the slide is progressed, in which case it reduces to one option, or it only shows one option from the start. The option that does stay visible is the last on the list, or far right option. I tend to ensure that is the 'Menu' button, and put all other resources to the left of that.

Recently I have been seeking all options on displaying the largest display size possible as the files are used of presentations in training. Hence, removing the title increases the display area more, which is really helpful.

I can supply links or SL360 files, but suspect you may be able to replicate the issue quicker on your sample course.

Thanks for sharing the file and allowing us to take a look.

• Can you share a bit more about the environment you are experiencing the issue in?
• Is it a particular slide?

I published as the settings were in your file, which was locally, and can view the course in IE, Edge, and Chrome and see the topbar options as expected:

As you can see even in preview mode, viewing on a mobile device moves this menu to the icon on the side, which is expected behavior:

Please let me know what I'm missing or if you are perhaps publishing to a different environment than what I was seeing set in the file.

Thank you for your response and attempt at replicating. Odd that you are getting different results. I have republished again to ensure a consistency.

I see the problem when publishing with title not showing:

CD - top tool bar options appear for a split second, then disappear leaving just the last one.

Web - top tool bar options only show last option (menu)

I have been viewing in Chrome, but have previously tested in other browsers.

When opening, I have tried:

• CD -
  • Launch_Story.exe (our historical default)
  • Story.html
  • story_html5.html
  • All have same result (however, as an aside, slides run very slow unless using Story_htlm5.html!)
• Web -
  • story.html (our historical default)
  • story_html5.html 
  • story_flash.html
  • The first two show the fault, but the flash option does not! (we are seeking to avoid flash as this software is being stopped)

FYI my colleague is experiencing the same issue. He is checking everything he is doing as well.

Do let me know what else I can pass on to help and I look forward to your thoughts.

Just to add the the irritation, just published a job to Articulate360, and the top menu bar resources are not showing on this either! 

Seems the only way to remove the title, but not lose the top menu resources, is to use the 'story_flash.html' file to open - but we are very keen to set up avoiding anything for flash as this is being stopped.

I have a colleague that can reproduce the behavior on Chrome with the HTML5 version, but it seems to work if she turns Flash off. 

I still cannot replicate the behavior.

I published Scene 2, since that's where your screen captures were from, and I assumed it'd be a good test piece:

At least we have one of your colleague's able to replicate!

I opened the published scene 2 and the problem showed, i.e. I could only see 'menu' in the top tool bar. This is the same in review version. 

Two conditions allow the top bar resources to show:

1. Leaving the title in - but this can often result in the title appearing over the top of the top bar resources links, looking awful (and reduces the display area)

2. Using the file story_flash.html to open

Is it possible that this is linked to flash in some way?

Possibly Nick, that's what I'm trying to track down. Which is also why I shared the HTML5 only output. How did that work for you? 

The published to HTML5 only actually still showed the problem. 

Of note, I have loads of updates to presentation so been trying to get workarounds. Publishing to web, CD and Review all have similar glitches. With CD, the slides will function fine when in fixed size, but once full screen it all goes wrong!

Really grateful for help as this is becoming a significant problem for us. Now having to considering removing all top bar resources, except 'menu' and creating a separate page to host extra resources. Seems a real shame to lose the functionality that has been a real benefit with Storyline. None of this seemed to have occurred prior to the recent updates.

Hi Alyssa, yes SL 360 - Nick has outlined the identical issues I am having. If a test file is going to help then I will try to provide one but I suspect the same results as have been found with Nick's test file above.

We'd love another test file, as we saw some inconsistent results with Nick's original file.

Also, can you please let us know the following:

• Exact version number of Storyline you're using
• Where your publishing and hosting the content
• What browser(s) you're testing in, including the version 
• If you've seen this in the Flash, HTML5 output or both

I'm also having this issue.  The topbar isn't there when the modern player starts with the sidebar collapsed.  They appear when you open and close the sidebar, or if you start with the sidebar open.

Thanks so much for bringing this up. I saw the same thing in my own testing, specifically with the 'Menu' tab.

Did you notice this problem with the Menu tab, or with other tabs as well?

I actually had menu in my sidebar.  I was losing a lightbox and exit button from the topbar.

One of the fixes addresses an issue where topbar tabs were missing when the sidebar was collapsed in the modern player.  Michelle, it looks like you were having an issue with this behavior.
