trouble with formatting text variable in a slide master

Jun 08, 2018

Hello.
with the last update of storyline 3 the formatting of a variable of type "% text%" in the paragraph and in the bulleted lists is no longer respected, if the variable is present in the slide master.

All text is shown without interruption.

Previously, everything worked fine.

I have carried out some tests and the problem is not related to the positioning of the% Text% variable in the slide master but to the positioning on a layer.
When the text type variable is in a layer it loses its formatting (paragraph, lists, etc.).
This only happens since the last update was made available

Hi Paolo,

Thanks for sharing your file with us here, but I'm unsure what issues you're running into with formatting as I saw your use of the %Text% variable on your main slide and the slide layer but wasn't clear on where you were setting the formatting. I saw you're setting the text variable to a value from a trigger, but there isn't a way to add formatting within that trigger.

Let me know if you can shed a bit more light on your process.

This happens ... a button brings up a layer called 'text' within which the variable 'Text' is. This variable accepts, for each slide, through copy / paste the text present in the 'Notes' panel and that is in practice the text of the spoken comment. This is useful for people with hearing problems.
If the text in the 'Notes' panel has bullets or paragraphs, the variable inserts them correctly but only if it is positioned on the root level. If the text box with the variable "% Text%" is instead on a different layer, the formatting is lost.
This could be remedied in the old version of Storyline through the technique described in this post

Steve,
OK, nice to know!
I found a workaround: Copy / paste or enter text with text entry field (design time). Then copy / paste the text from the text field to the variable input box. The line breaks show up. Voila!
Thanks
Jørgen
But with the latest update this is no longer possible.
The only solution is to manually insert the <br> tag in the text of the 'Notes' panel and then copy / paste it into the variable value. In this way the paragraphs are respected.
Thanks for the reply.

PS. in the screenshot attachment you can see how the text is correctly formatted in the 'Notes' panel. In the trigger panel the text appears all of the following but in the previous version of Storyline it was however shown correctly within the slide. Now no longer

Thanks, Paolo for that image.

I know that our team is looking at a similar issue with line breaks in a text entry that is referenced later, but I haven't seen the same thing with just setting the variable value and displaying it on a layer versus a slide.

I'll share your example with my team to take a better look at and determine if this is the same issue or not! If not, we can always get a new bug report filed and once we have any updates or additional information to share - we'll let you know!
