Use an image (or Audio) as a variable or constant.

Oct 23, 2016

This may be a new feature request.

I've been building vocabulary templates for language tuition.

Tutors can build new word lists into the template by changing the 10 words which are used as variables.

Each word also has a picture to support learning. If only I could add the 10 pictures as a variable... (or at least a referenced resource) Simply a box as a placeholder refering to %picture1%, then it would be simple for tutors to create many word lists quickly.

Also...

Audio samples could be added as variables but applied by place holders. %audio1% etc.

I'm new on the forum, so if this already exists please forgive me and point me at it.

Many thanks - Clive D

Hi Matthew. Thanks for you reply... I wasn't sure if this would get noticed.

I've used the different states such as the different expressions on the characters or hovering over/pressing buttons etc.

What I'm suggesting is a little different. We have 10 words, 10 pictures and 10 Audio samples.

i.e."apple", "a picture of an apple" and "someone saying apple" etc along with 10 other words.

Then we have lots of slides with many challenges such as:

match the word to the picture (amongst the other 10 words and pictures)

Sort the letters to make the word pictured.

or type in the letters to make the word pictured. (All of these are on different slides).

Every time variable %word1% (i.e. "Apple")  is used throughout the various slides in the project I just refer to the variable %word1%.

When the template is changed for a new set of 10 words I simply change the variable %word1% from "apple" to a new word for instance "orange". And orange comes up on every slide that refers to the variable %word1%. Simple!

If only I could do that for every time "picture 1" is used on all the various slides of mix and match or sort the letters etc then that would be brilliant. Instead I have to copy and paste it all the way through the many slides it's used on.

...and - every time the word list is changed "voice sample 1" which supports the picture, also has to be changed in each of the triggers on each slide where it's needed. Whereas if they could be set as a variable...  for instance %SpokenWord1% then that too would be brilliant!

To create a new 10 vocabulary challenge with 40 various slides to practice the words would mean only changing 10 words (which is already possible as a variable) 10 pictures and 10 media.

The images would be added in the variables page instead of just adding a word or a number you would need a new button "add media". After that you could refer to it from any slide.

I could imagine using place holders to refer to the variables of pictures and samples just as text boxes can contain %word1%. Pictures could even resize to fit smaller or larger place holders.

It make perfect sense to me but I may be a long way away from how normal users use Articulate.

Does this make sense to anyone else?

Hi Clive,

First off, welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community! We're happy you're here - and what a question to start out with!

Matthew pointed you in the right direction with all things, but your additional explanation certainly provides a deeper picture. There isn't an asset library of sorts within Storyline that would allow you to reference these items and therefore automatically change it throughout multiple slides...but sure would be cool if there was! I'm all about a little behind the scenes magic. If you didn't do so already, definitely share this write up as a feature request - those get into the hands of our developers/product managers and allow for more categorization and tracking than the forums.

Otherwise, let us know what else you need and based on the sound of this course idea I can't wait to see what else you share!

Sorry not been on for a few days.

Thank you for the encouragement Ashley. I've put it up as a new feature request and sent them my project to show a little more detail... lets see if they bite. I could certainly use such a function and I guess it would help others too, who may have not even contemplated the idea.
