using next button in survey

Dec 23, 2014

Hi all,

I am working on a project (on storyline 2) with 10 survey. On the feedback layer of each survey i'd like to use a next button to go to the next slide. I can't use a customed button on the layer because I have a lot of information on my layer and the client do not want the button to be on top of it.

Anyway if I want to go to the next slide it works just fine but if I try to go to any other slide (I am using a menu so the trainees do not do the 10 survey at once) it goes to the next slide anyway or it does not do anything if my slide is the last of the scene. I have tried to put my trigger for the next button on every layer but it does not change a thing.

To get it to work I made copies of my menu but its quite complicated and the trainee cannot revisit the survey using my menu which is kind of the point.

Maybe this is not possible in storyline ?

Hi Laura

the SL  next button is associated with the slide (base later) unless you build a custom next button to add to other layers  which you said you didn't want. Are you using the trigger 'hide slide layer'? That will bring you back to a base later and allow you to move forward.

have you thought about putting a custom  menu on a layer of the slide master and using triggers to go to the screens you want.

Hi Wendy,

I do not hide the slide layer because the client want the trainee to stay on the feedback (with correction) of the survey. The survey are not graded, there informative. I thought about putting the feedback on a different slide instead of a layer but that would double (or triple) my number of slide and it would be a lot of work.

The thing is I do move forward using the next button, just not to the slide I want to move forward to.

About the custom menu layer I do not understand exactly what you suggesting me to do. I have a menu with 5 buttons (chevrons) that each leeds to 2 survey. At the end of my 2 surveys I need the learner to go back to the menu and choose to click on the next chevrons or see the feedback of the 2 survey again. I am not sure I am making myself clear...

Hi Laura

maybe I don't understand.

When you say you move forward but not to the slide you want to - there is a trigger ' Jump to slide' and then you can choose any slide or scene you want to jump to from there it doesn't have to be the next slide in your story.

Below I am moving from Slide 1 to Slide 3 when I click the Next button.

Hope that makes sense...

Do you want to post a screenshot of your menu slide so I can see if I understand what you need to do

Hi Wendy,

I am trying to post my story but i am having some trouble with my network. Hope this post will work.

I did change the trigger so that my next button is set to jump to the menu slide (which is in another scene right now) but it jump to the next slide anyway !

The story in attachment is part of my document only : the menu and the first few survey. I had to remove most of it for confidentiality reason but this should give you the general idea of what i am trying to do.

Thank you for your answer.

Hi Laura

I have updated your story file.  In a lot of the slides you had a trigger 'jump to xx when the timeline starts' so this was making them jump all over the place.

I have attached your menu buttons to each of the Q slides so you can see them jumping to Q1 or Q2 or Q3 or Q4

Let me know what it is that you still want to happen with the menu.

Hello !

Sorry for the delayed response, I was on holidays. Happy new year by the way.

As for the file, the menu works but i need (well the client want...) the user to come back to the menu at the end after on or two question, and then click on the next one. But even when i change the trigger to "jump to XXX slide" instead of "jump to the next slide" it goes to the next question and not to the menu !

I think what I am trying to do is not possible in Storyline and I might have to use a custom button anyway, unless you have any other idea.

Hello Laure!

I reviewed your file, and the player next button trigger does not seem to be working properly. When you create a quiz slide, the feedback layer will automatically add a trigger to jump to next slide when clicking the built in continue button. You can modify the feedback layers to your own design, and redesign the continue button as well. However the Continue button is what triggers to the next layer. If you try to add in the Player Next button, it will jump to the next slide by default, as this button is not generally on the quiz slides.

You may want to recreate the quiz questions and use the built in feedback layers, but adjust them to your own design, but leaving the built in Continue button, but modify the text to say Next, and modify that to  jump to the menu scene. Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but hopefully it will help.

I have created a sample file for you to look at.
