Using variables to advance layers using prev/next buttons
Jun 25, 2013
Hi guys!
Thanks to the forums I have mostly figured out how to use variables to trick the default Previous and Next buttons in the Storyline player to advance layers rather than just slides. However, for whatever reason I can't figure out how to make the Previous button go back to the base slide/layer, but every other layer works perfectly.
I'll include a very stripped down version of my project to demonstrate the issue I'm running into.
Thanks!
Edit: Ignore the "Quiz" button, it's just a placeholder. Also, it seems when I angrily click the Previous button several hundred times when it's stuck on Layer 1 it takes the variable set at 1.00 into the negatives, so the user would have to click Next several hundred times +1 to advance again.

I added one trigger that hides layer 1 when Variable 1 is 0 before it llops backto the slide; that seems to work.
Sorry for the late reply, but thank you! That worked perfectly. Of course in hindsight that seems so obvious, but I never would have thought of that solution at this stage in my understanding of Storyline.
I have been trying to use a similar scenario for a layer slides back to back and then forwarding to a plain slide. The counter is not working correctly. Sometimes the user has to press next or previous twice (depending on which direction they are moving). I can get this system to work with resetting variables on each side of the layer slide and adjusting the states when there is a plain slide, layer slide, then plain.
But when I have plain, layer slide, layer slide, then plain, I can't get the counter to reset or work correctly. How do you keep fluidity between layer slides and non-layered slides using variables to adjust the next and previous buttons?
