Variables in Storyline 2 not working
Aug 31, 2015
Hi guys,
I'm creating an interaction that uses a variable and runs on one of my layouts so that it runs on every slide that uses that layout. However when I tested this the variables counter does not change. I placed a text block to track ti on screen and I can see that it stays at 0. I tried creating a new variable and changing all the triggers to use the new one instead, but that one also would not work. Then I thought I would take a look in the Variables window to see if the Variable was set up correctly and noticed the Use Count was 0. I have definitely used the correct variable but both the old and the new have a Use Count of 0. Any ideas what has happened here?

Hi William
can you upload the story file - might be easier for someone to troubleshoot if they can see it
Yes please upload story file...
Variable names are case sensitive. You might check that.
Hi William! Looks like you are getting some assistance here. Just let us know if you need us to take a look.
Hi guys,
Unfortunately I can't send the file as it is a client project. But I have definitely got the correct case (as the variable is chosen from the list of available variables). And i have even tried creating a new one and using that instead with no luck. I've attached screenshots from my file to see if you can spot anything obvious that I'm missing. The only thing that might be strange is that the triggers are on a slide layout, but I can't avoid that.
I would try attaching these triggers to the slide, rather than to the progress bar. I'm not sure they can read the timeline if they are attached to the progress bar object.
I've moved them from the object to the slide, but still no luck. Maybe because it is a Master layout? I really can't add them separately onto every page.
I moved all the triggers back onto the bar and the entire object to an individual slide and the Use Count is working now. I guess you can't have this type of variable interaction on a master slide? Not sure if this is a bug or oversight
This hasn't worked either because the variables need to act on objects that are on the master slide, so short of copying those to every page as well I'm stuck for ideas. I might need to scrap the functionality i was aiming for.
I had the same issue - I wanted a flashing next button, tried it on the master slide but won't work because each slide is different, some they need states to change, others when timeline ends...its a pain but I have ended up do the layer on each slide...
Yeah it's a shame because the Progress object does that same thing on every page, but it needs to check different objects. Oh well.
