Variables with a true / false animation

I am trying to create this course which uses true / false buttons which are meant to 'open and close'. The course uses variables to determine how to the buttons open and close, ie the chosen button opens and the opposite button closes. 

If you run through the course, you will see that even though the variables are identical for each slide (I hope...), the course doesn't always operate as intended. However, the first slide always works perfectly.
