Something I like to do when switching the direction of the line is to increase the thickness of the line to make it a little easier to see when trying to make it perfectly straight.

Since the line is part of a shape, you're going to want to change the position of the line visually. Currently, there is no way to lock the line if it's part of a shape, but that sounds like an interesting idea that I can share with our product team.
