Video Link Playback in different browsers

Apr 03, 2019

Hello folks,

It has been a while since I developed anything in Storyline, due to a change of organization and role, but it seems all roads lead back to content development and in my case SL.

I had a question on video playback from a URL attached to a trigger in SL. Our organization still widely uses IE11 (majority), and then there are pockets of use for Edge and Chrome.

When launching the video from the published SL module the following happens:

Chrome: The video opens in a new window and starts playing without issue.

MS Edge: Same as above with Chrome

IE 11: this is where things don't work so smoothly. IE 11 asks is you want to open or save the file via the dialog box that opens at the bottom of the window. If you select Open, it proceeds to download the video and then play it.

My question : is there any way to ensure the video just plays in IE11 as with Edge and Chrome? Is it a Browser setting / SL setting / Video setting?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Have a great day all!

Pierre

Hi Alyssa,

So, I did a bit more testing.

The behavior above happens when the file is imported into our LMS. The curious thing is, if we import the video link into our LMS as a video asset, and launch it, it plays straight away on all browsers. This leads me to believe there is a issue with the SL package / settings / SCORM etc.

Any further insight will be greatly appreciated

Hi Pierre,

As Alyssa mentioned, there isn't a way to change this within Storyline, as we rely on the browser and hosting platform to determine how those resources are opened, played, or downloaded. I'd suggest reaching out to your  Learning Management System (LMS) admin to see if they had any thoughts!
