I need a solution for adding optional captions to a video.
I would use objects positioned on the timeline, but the client doesn't want to use the storyline seek bar, they want to use the video controls available when you 'show video controls'.
Use video editing software to add the captions directly to the video. If you use good editing software, you will also have better control of how the caption is animated on and off of the screen, and better control of the timing.
Hi Luke! You might also consider using Replay where you could import your video file and add a Lower Third. Replay allows you to publish your video projects to an .mp4 format which can then be used in any of your Articulate programs!
I wasn't sure which version of Storyline you're using, and the links above are for Replay 360. You can also find more information for Replay 1 here, if you've already got that one!
Thanks the specific functionality I've been asked for is a video playing
with no subtitles, which when you toggle a subtitles button, displays
subtitles without breaking the flow of the video.
It's not quite the same thing, but would adding a transcript instead of closed captions suffice?
The text won't appear in time with the video, but it will still allow the learner to read all the dialogue/narration.
The learner click a button to show a transcript, then close the transcript by clicking a close icon or anywhere else on screen outside the transcript box
We don't announce product roadmaps for new products/features or updates. However, I'd suggest that you follow us on Twitter to stay up to date! Once we do have information to share, we'll be certain to update folks here.

I wanted to pop in here and mention that a closed captioning feature will be added to Storyline 360 in Q1 2017, so be on the look out for that!
Is there a features development roadmap available to the public for Articulate products?
