One of the assignments in the module is to have the user write an essay. Since storyline doesn't have text formatting features, what would be the best way to capture this information? It doesn't have to be captured in the LMS if an alternative method is available (i.e., Google drive?)
If you need to reference the text later as entered you're most likely going to need to roll your own web based solution as I've done for clients. I have storyline generate a unique student token (if running outside an LMS), then embed the textbox as a web object that includes the SL generated student token. The token could be as simple as first name + last name + count of characters in the full name (counted in javascript)

You might consider linking to an external web page with appropriate text capture (online notepad) capability via a Web Object
Thanks Brian! Any recommendations on which ones are good?
