So, I have buttons dispersed throughout my courses for my users to click on so that they can progress through the material. I'm having an issue where the video clip the user has just finished watching will restart if the user clicks anywhere other than the hotspot control that's set up to advance the slide.
My slides were all made through screen recordings on "Test Mode".
I thought about that, but that would mean going through hundreds of slides and manually adding the transparent shape. It would definitely solve the problem, but it would take a long time :(
That does complicate things. You could speed things up by copying and pasting the transparent shape and the hotspot, but it's still hundreds of paste operations.
Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you are experiencing with your project. You mention that the video is restarting, which is a bit different than the pause that Simon described.
Would you be able to share your .story file so that we can take a look?
I think this is a bug that was introduced in Storyline but as far as I know it has been fixed in latest 360 build, the transparent shape does not fix this one. Not tested to see if it is still there in 3.19.
I can't speak to 3.19 (I have to get to the coffee shop to update), but in 3.18 it's behaving exactly as I described above when it comes to clicking on the video. Also, a transparent (or in the attached example, semi-transparent) object prevents the clicking, so stops the video from pausing or restarting.
I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but you are correct in your description. Patrick's description makes me think the video is starting over from the beginning, not just resuming, so I wanted to take a look :)
Simon I think what is being explained is different to this. There was a bug when a video has ended clicking on the slide not the video causes the video to replay. This was definitely fixed in a beta build and I believe it was also fixed in a recent release.
Unfortunately for that bug adding a transparent shape or hotspot did nothing to prevent the replay, I tried overwork around I could and couldn't stop it, I am sure it is fixed now.
Interesting. I hadn't come across that bug. Let's hope that's what was happening in Patrick's case because it's much less work to update Storyline than to add hundreds of shapes. :-)
Hi Leslie! I'll reply to you directly, but hopefully everybody gets to see this as well.
Simon's perception of what I'm dealing with seems spot on. If the is playing, clicking somewhere on the clip pauses it, and clicking again resumes it. If the video is completed (and in almost every case, the user must click on a button to advance the slide, and if they miss click), the video will start over from the beginning. I can't have that!
I'm attaching one of my lessons where this has been an issue. Thank you!
I think you may have both issues the fix for pause/resume is unfortunately as Simon suggests you need to overlay a transparent shape or hotspot.
Does your video cover the whole slide? If it does then Simons fix will fix this as well, if it doesn't and clicking anywhere restarts the video it is the bug I mentioned and updating storyline should fix that.
Indeed our video clips cover the entire slide. We use Storyline to create lessons that emulate our software, to teach clients how to use it. That's why we use buttons and such for clients to interact with to advance the slides - what they're doing is interacting with a mock system. It's unfortunate that a slight miss-click will result in a long video explanation repeating itself.
I'm unable to click on your slides and get the video to pause.
Would you be able to share your .story file for me to take a look and just point me to one of the slides you are having an issue with so that I can take a closer look to see if we can help you out with your needed set-up?
I've attached the file again. For a good illustration of what happens, click on the "Reservations" slide in the menu that's on the left-hand side when previewing the whole project, and click on the video as you see me clicking on stuff and manipulating our software. Like, if you click on the video right after I click on "New search," a bunch of different search options will be revealed but you can pause all of that when you click.
It happens on every slide! It's as if every video clip has hidden controls you can't disable! It's frustrating when I'm hiding the controls but my clients can still use them!
Have you added a transparent shape or hotspot over each video yet? All the videos will Play/Pause when you click them if you do not do this, there is no function to disable this.
Thanks for sharing your .story file and the steps to replicate so that I could take a look.
I'm not seeing the pausing behavior that you mention when viewing your course. I made a quick recording here of what I see upon preview and I published the course here if you'd like to take a look.
Do you experience the same behavior in my published file?
First of all, you are the absolute BOMB. Thank you for working so hard to help me figure out what's going on.
You mentioned you didn't see the pausing behaviour, but it looks like it actually did pause for you. When you watch the "Reservations" clip, the little loading icon that appears before the big search table comes up shouldn't pause at all. It should show the animation without any choppiness and then continue right to the table.
If you click on the video any time you see my cursor move and it stops moving, you've probably paused it. Try rapidly clicking on the video and see if the cursor starts and stops for you like it is for me.
🤦🏻♀️You're absolutely right Patrick. Thanks for your patience and for pointing that out.
I agree with Phil, the transparent shape will alleviate this issue for you. I've attached your file where I've set this for the same Slide 5 we've been taking a look at.
You can select that shape and copy it, then paste on all applicable slides as needed.

My team has had similar issues with videos pausing on clicking.
Our solution was to put a transparent shape over the video object. As long as your hotspot is in front of the shape, it should work.

Isn't it the same issue? I thought it worked like this:
