Why can't View and Try Modes be combined?

Jun 07, 2017

There was a feature request submitted over 3 years ago and here I am still trying to figure out a better way to combine View and Try Modes which Captivate can do easily and with the ability to edit every detail.  I don't want the user to have to watch first then attempt to try it.   I want to provide guided simulations so that they can practice in system without having to view it first.  It is so pain staking and time consuming with Storyline, I am thinking in the future I will just stick to Captivate and embed them into Storyline.

I guess I am looking for an improved Try Mode.  Instead of rollover hint layers where the user has no idea what to do unless they somehow mouse over the area.  Guided simulations similar to what Captivate does.  I have to manually add captions telling them what to click on, then remove the hint layer and it is a lot of manual editing and work.  It is quite daunting especially due to my experience with Captivate.

I've done this in the past. Insert a scene as try mode. And then insert a scene as view mode (which will be hidden in the player). In the try mode, I add a simple instruction to guide them. It may be something like this: click on insert and insert a button. I dont give them a lot of info, just enough to get them moving forward.

I also add a "help" button that is a lightbox link to the corresponding view mode slide.

This seems to work fine for us. And it's not a lot of work.

Hi Stephanie based on what you wrote, I think you would benefit from modifying the Try Mode options so the hints always show.  This will save you from manually adding captions and users will have the visual cue on where to click next.
