Articulate and Kineo.

Mar 31, 2013

Hi Guy's,

Any chance some of you can give me a few tips! Any help would be much appreciated.

So I have been put in charge of setting up our LMS for our company but I hadn't even heard of LMS before 2 weeks ago! These forums have been very helpful in learning though.

I have been working full time with this and I have narrowed my choices down to Kineo and Topyx LMS's but I am not sure if I can use Articulate with Topyx? I can with Kineo right?

One thing I'm a little confused about is when making my course how much do I use say Kineo's course template and how much of the course do I actually have to design myself?

Also if any of you could give me any feedback on your experience with Kineo or Topyx that would be really, really appreciated! You can either tell me her or email me at samaan010@gmail.com.

Thanks a lot!

Sam

Hi Sam - and welcome to the Heroes Community.

From looking at their website - I see no reason why Topyx should not support Articulate products(the output of Story line or Presenter). Remember - "Articulate" is just the company - it always helps to clarify the product names.

I am assuming you mean Kineo's "Totara" LMS platform.

You can either design yourself, or use Templates - Kineo is just another LMS/eLearning company. Not quite sure what you mean by "Templates". Kineo have used the SDK to design many custom GUIs for Presenter eLearning - but the SDK is not available yet for Storyline.

Bottom line - you can build what you want, with either the Articulate Presenter (Suite) products, or Articulate Storyline - using either your own, or someone else's templates. You are not limited to using Kineo "stuff" if you use their platform, (however - they may try and sell it to you like any good company would   )

Hope that is all OK - and hope I have not misrepresented Steve Rayson/anyone else at Kineo - who produce some great eLearning.

Totora is good and is a version of moodle that has been modified for corporate clients, specifically the Reporting has been imporved and other additions that corporate clients would expect from an LMS.\

I would contact Kineo and get a demo, I agree with Bruce there are others out there, se a few different options and see what they will offer you.

Thanks Guy's,

Yea I just wanted some advice on what other people thought of Kineo (my first pick). It's hard to find any feedback from people that don't work there! Non biased advise is always good to hear before purchasing a product.

I've looked through about 20 companies. Some of the pricing is insane! I've had quotes for up to 200k!

I probably used the wrong wording for templates. What I was trying to get at is if it would be easier to use kineos course design or articulates course design.

Thanks for the help!

Sam.

Hi,

Still not quite sure what you mean by this....

Have they suggested a design template to be used for all course?

Can you show us what you mean via a screenshot?

Thanks.

Umm no I was just using the wrong wording. I was wondering about course authoring. I'm not sure if it's better to go with Kineo's course authoring software or to use Articulate. It's hard to decide when I don't know much about course authoring.

Basically I have narrowed my LMS vendor down to 3 companies: Kineo/Totara/, Topyx and Upside Learning. These seem like pretty good options to me but It's a tough decision to actually pick one.

Thanks for all your help!

Sam.

So Sam, I'm just wondering what criteria you are using to make your choice?  It might make sense to list out all the things you want from your LMS and then go to each vendor and ask them to demo how they can support your requirements.

As for what authoring tool to use, it makes sense to me that you would build your courses in a tool that allows for portability so that if you ever want to move to a different LMS or even offer the course outside of the LMS you are not stuck.
