Creating an ePortfolio

Feb 13, 2013

Hi,

I am looking to create an ePortfolio.  My background has been in the learning and Development industry in high-tech companies.  I am a certified Instructional Designer, worked with eLearning Project Management and designing, developing and delivering training in different formats.

I have been stay home mom for about five years (during this time I got my ID Certificate) and am now ready to go back to work.  My question is what are some recommended domains to host my portfolio.  I am looking for something that is easy to use, update etc.  Even if there is a small fee to be paid, that's fine.

Thanks for your help.

Another option is a hybrid web site that combines searchable non-Storyline elements and Flash Storyline elements. At the risk of crass self-promotion, you might want to look at my site which includes a couple of Storyline tools - an 'About us' module and a Storyline gallery of examples of the calculators I produce.

Hello,

If you'd like something free then you could try:

http://www.wix.com/

I gave wix a try a few weeks ago.  It's a little harder to use than the other two, but also more aesthetically pleasing.  They're free options, but you have to live with some ads.

Here's my portfolio done with the WordPress plugin WP-Portfolio:

There are other options, like choosing a portfolio theme:

My advice is, look around and decide what sort of look and features you want for your portfolio, find a theme or plugin that does what you want, and don't exclude commercial themes and plugins. Your portfolio presents the best you have to offer, so you don't want to skimp on it.. One of the best affordable options for hosting is Bluehost, in my opinion; it's the solution I recommend to my clients who can't afford (or don't need) a higher-end solution:

Finally, you want to address backups and security. I recommend BackupBuddy for backups, and WordFence for security monitoring. Also, Better WP Security for its security lockdown features (things you do when you're setting up the site).

You also want to avoid Flash solutions ... many managers and executives are now using iPads (ours do here, even though they're forbidden for lowly employees like me ).

Well, lets be honest...who uses Internet Explorer nowadays anyhow? I just installed Windows on my MacBook Pro this past weekend and the first thing I did was open IE so that I could install Firefox.

Unfortunately tons of companies still use IE.  In fact I recently had to do a project in which the company was just transitioning from IE 6 to IE 8 so I had to make sure the modules ran on IE 6.

We got the stragglers off IE6 and onto IE7 not that long ago. There are old applications still in use that will only run on IE6. Currently, a large percentage of people are on IE7 and Windows XP in the company, but there's a project ongoing to get everyone up to Windows 7.

IT departments are typically very conservative with regard to change, particularly in large companies.
