Default value of variables not getting detected

I am trying to recreate an example seen in an elearning challenge done by Molly Fischer.

I have created variables for the text inputs within the table. When I click check button, if no value has been entered, the table cell should turn red. I use a trigger to turn the state of the rectangle shape placed over each of the cells where numbers have to be inputted if the value is still the default value of 0.
But, it is not working. Could somebody help. please?

Try setting value to 0 on timeline start, I suspect if you checked in javascript it would be NaN
I did that. It worked in showing up as red when Check button was clicked. But, now I have another problem. The value 0 shows up in the text input boxes at the beginning. How can I keep it blank and show entry only when typed?
I did not notice you are using text entry fields, you should not be looking for 0 instead should be looking for blank (leave field entry in trigger)
Thank you. That helped.
