Downloadable content

Jan 20, 2021

Hi, we are curious to know whether anyone offers downloadable content for their learners and whether that is standard practice or not. We have recently had a few queries where they have asked for downloadable content so they can view the course offline, or to email out the slides to them. We don't currently offer an option to have separate slides or downloadable content. Our courses are created in Storyline, Rise and H5P in Moodle.

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, Amanda,

Course completion is tracked through an LMS, which requires going through the content in that online system.

But there's certainly nothing wrong—and there's a lot right—about offering something that allows for reviewing content outside the LMS. It could be the basic text/script from the course. It could be a job aid developed in a different format with different software. Whatever seems appropriate based on the content.

My main client also got requests from users for a way to review content outside the LMS. So now I create "course guides" for them. To do that, I just put screenshots from the course (not including quiz questions) in a PowerPoint.

  • Each simple slide in Storyline is captured and placed on one slide in the PPT.
  • Each step of an interactive slide is captured, so those require multiple slides in the PPT.
  • I also include a note at the beginning that the file is for review only, and that someone must complete the course and pass the test in the LMS to receive their certification.
  • This approach works well for compliance courses and others that present basic info. Obviously, though, it wouldn't work for branched scenarios or similar interactions.
  • And, also obviously, this approach works well with Storyline. However, you can publish a Rise course as a PDF, but I don't know how those look. I assume they could be edited with the appropriate software.
