This may be too simplistic for your purposes, but you could use a transparent object that is bigger than your target and is positioned behind the target. Then add a trigger that hides the layer when the drag object is dragged over the transparent object. See attached a quick example.

Thanks - potential solution, however if the learner lets go of the object the layer remains... might need some though.
