Idea for a course feedback

May 14, 2012

HI

i have been asked to write a course about our internal audit , who, why and what they are.

so  far they have given me

What is Internal Audit?

Essentially, it’s about checking that everything that the organisation does is being done properly.  Thus, it’s about helping the organisation to achieve its objectives.  It’s not just about confirming that the organisations money is being looked after, although that is an important part of its role.

The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) defines internal auditing as:

"an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organisation's operations.  It helps an organisation accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes."

It carries on in this type of vein for around 8 slides.  As far as I can tell, every year they just have to make people aware of Internal Audits role.  I was thinking of doing a kind of "Closer" or "Take a Break" magazine style with a clickable front cover with things like
  •  Internal v External Audit - You decide!,
  • Head of Internal Audit reveals the secrets to a good Audit.
  • "I wsh I'd never done it" - My Audit heartbreak  by a (Theif of smoekind- not worked out wording)
  • Spotted! - Audits on the go, where have audits been taken this year.
  • problem page - Dear Blah Blah, I think my colleague is.....

Does this sound really silly?  It made a lot of sense to me when walking the dog yesterday.

Thanks

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I do a lot of good thinking while walking my dog also .

It doesn't sound silly to me. I like the idea of using magazine or newspaper headlines with fonts/ pics and wording that grab Learners' attention. And, I like the headlines you've come up with thus far.

Does the organization also plan to quiz Learners so they can apply their recently learned information immediately? Good way to begin transferring the info into Long term memory.

Could any of your magazine/newspaper stories tie back in to the training? For example, in the "wish I'd never done it", can this be a story where the Learner can identify which recently learned practice the "thief-of-some-kind" ignored,  thus setting himself up for a fall?

Hi Michelle,

I think your idea is a great one. Very clever.

One piece of advice I learned while writing something similar....  don't forgot the WIIFM.

The benefits of IA can seem "distant" to the average employee. While they may be able to intellectually grasp the business case for it, it often fails t resonate personally. So if part of your goal is to earn "buy-in" from the participants, consider addding more WIIFM topics into your articles.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Hi Michelle,

I love the idea of layout - the headlines certainly gained my attention! Brilliant idea.

Good point from Bob - a lot of audits I've gone through (as the auditee) have involved a lot of my time, with no tangible outcome at the end and no actual change. Guess that's good as it means I've always complied!

But, I think incorporating the consequences of not doing things properly, I guess you've covered that off in a couple of headlines, but to me that's an important part of it all, and something that people should know as part of company knowledge, not just something they become aware of in the case of an audit.

Perhaps another headline with a link to the 'Audit Helpdesk' or something, ie where employees go to for help or to find more info.

There's a good magazine style download somewhere here isn't there? I'm sure I've seen one. If I find it I'll post it here.

Cheers

Sarah.

Thanks every one,  The wish I'd never..... was meant to be a story of how by not following procedures a case of fraud took place. Just need to convince Audit that if might be a way of enticing people to read it rather than a flat document.  They don't want a quix, just a "read it" marker.  Although I was going to put in a silly magazine style quiz in it.

Hmm, well the idea didn't go down too well with audt so I may save it for new starter induction.

However, when i was trying to convince them I was looking for something i'd seen on here and jokingly said "perhaps you could be Audit Super Heros!".  This went down a storm as one of the chaps loves comics.  So I've got the idea of the mild mannered auditors in a little office changing into super heros when they need to audit.  I think they would even be willing to be photographed this way too !!!
