Locking in Time Requirement for Articulate Module

Feb 17, 2016

Hi!  Need some assistance with locking in users to remain in a module for a certain length of time...can this either be done by locking in users to stay on a slide for a particular amount of time before they can click "Next", or, how do we set the completion time to a certain amount of time?  And if the user doesn't stay in the module for that period of time, they do not get credit for the course (i.e., module does not mark them as Complete.)

Help!

Hi Jeannie.  Is there a reason why you need your learners to remain in the course for a designated period of time? I know there are some environments or circumstances where there's a continuing education requirement that hinges upon the number of hours, but generally speaking, the behavior you're describing is something learners aren't too keen on so I'd suggest avoiding that if it's at all possible.

You can restrict or lock course navigation to prevent learners from skipping ahead without actually finishing the content. Here's how to do that in Storyline.

You can also track by viewing a particular slide after the restricted navigation. You can read more about how to do that here.

And if you're using Articulate Studio, just give me a shout here and I'll be happy to provide you with some links that walk through those settings as well.

Gotcha. Compliance courses can certainly impose some special challenges! Not long ago I wrote an article that was a collection of community ideas for making compliance training less boring. You can check it out here if you're looking for some ideas.

While there is no way to restrict learners to a specific time in Studio (or in Storyline for that matter), you can restrict navigation so they're forced to view all content. Instructions for controlling  navigation in Studio '13 are here.  While this approach doesn't give you a precise record of the amount of time spent in the course, it does give you some options for controlling how quickly learners can progress so folks don't just click Next and bypass information to get to the quiz.

Hope this helps you out!
