Looking for Instructional Design question ideas...

May 13, 2019

I'm currently undertaking the writing of a few short lesson plans, to be built in Storyline. These are all courses for systems training, and will require the learner to demonstrate their knowledge of how to carry out specific 'daily' and 'weekly' maintenance checks.

My idea is to present these tasks to the learner possibly as mini scenarios (e.g. something like this: "You've opened the panel and there are a number of tangled cables. Does everything look OK here? If not, what should you do?")

I'd appreciate anyone's input regarding ideas for question types, designs, etc. that I might want to consider trying...

If the above is too vague, please let me know and I'll try to shed as much light on the project as I'm able to.

Thanks!

This is very similar to our training projects. You are on the right track. Scenario-based training is how I would do this, Keep the scenarios as realistic and true-to-life as possible. This type of training typically needs to ensure that the learner is following the overall maintenance process for the task in hand and also check if each of the steps in the process are also being followed correctly. Our learners have to a do a lot of visual inspections to identify problems and then do troubleshooting based on the circumstance. We use photos and videos, and it is difficult to capture everything the learner would see in their work environment. It can be quite challenging to come up with effective online activities while you are teaching and assessing these types of skills.

We were hoping to use the new Rise Scenario block for this, as the outcome can change based on learner decisions, but unfortunately you can't use graphics or photos in the steps which makes scenarios useless for us. We are using a bunch of Rise Knowledge Checks with lots of images instead to simulate the process. We have too much content volume and two few developers to create using Storyline.

Hi Karl, thanks for the response.

I think the course is going well so far. I've been using a mix of drag/drop filling-in-the-blanks for task instructions; multiple choice for scenarios (making sure the correct option isn't obvious!); and regular multiple choice after "Does everything look OK here?" etc.

It would be great to work on a full-blown scenario-based course, but there's not the time or budget for it. This is just one in a range of similar courses, and it's meant to be more of re-cert/assessment than a learning course, so it needs to be kept fairly high-level.

I'd love to attach examples of my work for feeback, but because of non-disclosure etc. I don't think it would be possible...
