Moodle 2.7 Report writing - help required

Dec 23, 2014

Hi all

We purchased Moodle hosting and Articulate storyline.  We have been frantically writing courses in Articulate and have had our moodle pages designed by our hosts.  We have started to look at a few simple reports and it looks like they will need writing - the host company are potentially going to charge us a lot of money to do this - which we haven't got (not for profit org/no budget at all for this) and I don't like paying for something without understanding it sufficiently to know that the time quoted etc is ballpark etc. So it looks like I am going to see if its possible for me to write and then work out how to create a report

Can you help? is it possible as administrators, for us to write our own reports in moodle 2.7 eg learners name/course taken/result/date taken etc. if so where do we start? what do we need eg any extra add ons ? or is it in the standard version? and does a tutorial exist?

thanks in advance.

Hi Mandy

There are several standard reports within your Moodle system. Moodle standard reports are based on course activities.

Activity related report: i.e. SCORM activity creates a report for each attempt from a user. As trainer you can see this when you click to the activity in a seperate tab. which results are reported depend on the definitions in your SCORM package created in Storyline or similar tool.

Course report: All graded activities from a course are stored in the gradebook (Course administration block). You can see all graded activities listed there and all students in the course.  There are several options to aggregate the data. Data export is also possible.

If you describe more in detail which data should be visible, I can tell you if it is possible with standard reports.

If you need really individual reports you can install the Configurable reports plugin.  Its free and in the Plugin database from moodle.org. There are also several free report templates available.  You can also create individual  reports with some SQL.  Typically a developer who is familar with Moodle database structure needs 3-6 hours of development to create a new report and test it. Requirement is  a proper definition of the  data for the report.

Expanding report features are on the road map for Moodle core development.
