mutiple choice question - too many answers selected layer

Feb 06, 2019

Hi,

I have created a multiple choice question, where all answers are acceptable, but I only want them to select three options.  I have set it up with a new layer which gives the prompt that too many are selected using a series of variables set on each checkbox and a slide trigger but it only seems to work the first time, after that even if the user selects more than 3 answers they get the correct pop box instead of the try again.  I have even tried rebuilding the slide, and it happens again, works once then doesn't work after that.

I have attached a basic version of the slide I am having issues with, I cannot add original project due to privacy and would be very grateful if someone could let me know what I am missing?

Hi Nicki!

I looked at your file and see a number of things that I think we can tweak to help you out! But the first question I have is... Are you wishing for this to be a graded question or are you simply using the multiple response question's mechanics to achieve your desired slide design?

If you're trying to grade the question, then the current design will struggle because it tells Storyline that every checkbox must be selected in order for the answer to be correct. The built-in Multiple Response question mechanics determine this.

However, if your goal is to just have the user select x # of options (but no more than x #) and then show the video feedback, but it's not graded, then that's a pretty easy fix.

Let me know and we can take the next step!

I previewed the slide, and when I selected just 3 items and clicked Submit, it showed the Try Again layer -- and that layer tells me that I'm only supposed to select 3 items!

It never worked as you described. For example, if I immediately selected more than 3 items and clicked Submit, I didn't see the Too Many layer. And if I immediately selected all the items (i.e., the "correct" response) and clicked Submit, I saw the Correct layer with the video.

I added a text box with "%SelectionCount%" in it; that makes it show the contents of the designated variable, which is very handy for troubleshooting. Although you have the default value set as "0," when the slide opens, it appears as "-9" (negative nine). That's because the program subtracts 1 for every button in the Normal state when the timeline begins. So if I simply select all nine items, the value just goes back to "0." (At least, that's how it works for me in Storyline 3.) Seeing the variable change also showed me that the program was not subtracting 1 when a button was deselected.

As I looked more closely at those triggers to adjust the SelectionCount variable, I realized that they weren't set up to occur when the button was clicked; they were set up to occur when the state changed. It would be better to have the action occur when the button is clicked--with a CONDITION added to check the state.

Anyway, I started from scratch. I didn't set this up as a quiz question; I just set it up as an interaction (in a new slide added to your file). The counting isn't done until a "Submit Your Questions" button is clicked. And there are triggers to reset the counting variable (I named mine CountSelections) to 0 when starting over. This should work for you.

That's great, Nicki. I'm glad it worked for you. And I hope it provides a bit of inspiration and insight into programming options. Variables and conditions can seem daunting at first. But they're incredibly useful. Check out Articulate's tutorials for more info:
