PLEASE HELP WITH STATES!!!!!

All I want to do is have my selected text change color and show a layer when clicked.
I've tried with hot spots, shapes, buttons... but nothing will change the color. I followed the tutorial which is pretty much useless if you're not using the goofy characters. The states show as if they are going to work when viewed in the "Edit states" panel, but when I preview, the color does not change when clicked.
I am being forced to use this horrific software for my job and I am ready to throw my cpu out the window and switch to Captivate. Something so simple should not be so difficult!!!!!!!!! It's bad enough that there is no mac version... now this.

Hi Mike, and welcome to the community.
Sorry you are having trouble understanding how things work, perhaps the attached will help, took about 2 minutes.
May I recommend you re-visit the Tutorials. Like any software, it takes a little time - this simple example merely used a Custom State and a couple of Triggers.
Once again, a warm welcome.
Bruce
You could just you the visited state and no need for a trigger, if you just want a simple colour change
i appreciate the responses and i apologize for my late night rant - but i'd become very frustrated after 2 hours of trying to make this work. please see the attached file and explain to me what's different from what you sent. I still don't see what I'm doing wrong...
thanks again
Hmm...
I cannot see either.
I have just added new text boxes and all states appear to work fine.
Looks like there is something shonky about those text boxes, but I cannot for the life of my spot it, (but then have just returned from a Stag weekend so not firing on al cylinders yet....).
Try deleting them and recreating them - that seems to work absolutely fine when I do it...it does not solve the problem of WHY, but perhaps someone less full of Bourbon and Merlot can assist there.....
Bruce
yes - that's what i've resorted to also. and THANK YOU for at least verifying that I am not a moron, nor insane. unfortunately i'm the type to try and solve the WHY - to the point of obsession unfortunately - hence my 3 hour frustration session last night... could've used some of that bourbon!
Now - how do I make the others on the list change back to their respective colors when a new one is clicked? do I have to create 4 additional triggers for each item?
Hi Mike -
It appears that there's an issue with bullet lists and visited states when they're animated by first level paragraph.
Bruce is right that if you recreate the text box, apply a grow animation and use your triggers you'll be okay. I'm putting a quick screencast together to show you how to update your file.
Thanks Dave - had not spotted the animation angle....
Bruce
Okay, here's a quick overview showing you how you can work with visited states to remove the need for the extra trigger.
I also show how you can fix your file and why there's something we need to take a closer look at with animation by first level paragraph and states.
David - thanks for the time and effort. Appreciate the personal attention. I think I had first level paragraph animation applied because I originally had that list of 5 items in one text box but wanted more control over the timing - so i separated them into individual text boxes - but obviously failed to change the animation setting back to all at once...
And as for the custom trigger - that was also an attempt to "fix" my problem from last night. I tried every preset you offer - but thought maybe that was the issue, so i made a custom trigger and obviously still had no luck.
I do have a question about "visited" trigger though: will that automatically change back to normal when another item is clicked/triggered? Is there a simple way to do that - Or will i have to set up 4 additional triggers for each of my list items in order to have the others return to their normal states? I went ahead and set up the extra triggers, but it seems like there should be a simpler way to achieve the same outcome...
thanks again... especially considering it's Sunday afternoon!
Hi Mike -
Gotcha re: the custom states.
So, if you're looking to change the state based on the currently selected item, then you'd want to use Storyline's built-in Selected state instead of the Visited state.
Here's a quick tutorial on selected states and "button sets" which are exactly what you want to use: http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/adding-button-sets.aspx
