Problem-based learning vs Case-based learning

Jun 13, 2024

I have been asked to work with a team to develop Problem-based learning and Case-based learning as e-learning.  All the research I have done only includes information on using these approaches in Instructor Led classes.  Just wondering if anyone has developed any e-learning using these approaches or has any information that would be useful to begin our project discussions with the team.

If you define "case-based" loosely enough, then these might be examples of case-based e-learning. Our goals generally are to simulate the relevant aspects the learners' jobs and then use the e-learning as an opportunity for learners to practice those aspects, and to receive feedback or coaching from the course about their performance.

There's usually a bit too much info-dumping happening in the early pages of these courses, but once you get past those introductory slides, you'll see that most of the pages in these courses put learners in realistic situations and have them practice taking appropriate actions and making appropriate decisions, which aligns well with problem- and case-based learning models.
