Standard Operating Procedure

Apr 12, 2017

Hi,

Has anyone here ever created a standard operating procedure for creating courses as an instructional designer? Would you know where I can go to pull information? I pretty much know what I do as an instructional designer but I would like to compare it to a formal outline to fill in gaps that may exist. Thank you!

Hi Tara,

At a high level this sort of exists with the various ID models such as ADDIE, et al.  Is that what you mean?

At the more detailed level, such a procedure or outline would start to become less broadly applicable as lots of assumptions creep in. (Hence why all the models are kept at a fairly high level).

That being said, Friesen Kaye used to have a detailed flow chart/sop type thing for their advanced instructional design course(s). I think a lot of IDs found it too specific and only selectively applicable (see above point). but perhaps it might be worth Googling to see if you can locate.

What about Saul Carliner's book Training Design Basics? That book has checklists and processes for each step in the process. That might work. The book is geared mostly toward new people in the field. For myself, I found it mostly confirmed what I have learned though experience. It did fill in a few gaps though, and I appreciated how the book goes systematically through every step from beginning to end.
