Training and Performance Support for Manufacturing or Industrial sector

Jun 04, 2020

Hi,

Does anyone out there design training and performance support for the manufacturing or industrial sectors? I'm curious to know what tools, resources, technology you use. Also, have you seen any examples of outstanding designs that you could point me to? Any companies or people that experimenting with innovative approaches, etc.? I'm working on a project for a non-profit organization to reduce the burden of mosquito-borne diseases (in particular dengue) and some of the training might be for staff that are working in large-scale factories. We're looking for innovative, cost-effective, on-demand training and support ideas and also to get an idea of the learning needs of workers in these types of environments.

Andrea: I support field-based workers in my current role. As a general rule, these groups learn best on the job. So I've had success with structured job shadows in which learners learn and practice specific skills on the job. To simplify, there are a number of checklists of tasks. Learners perform them, get feedback for the person running the job shadow, and ultimately, the learner's performance is evaluated and tracked in the learning management system.

I have also had some success building performance support solutions. This may not be your case, but the workers I support have iPads, and so are able to pull up documentation/how-to guides at the moment they "get stuck" out in the field.

Hi Andrea! It really depends on the environment. I've made items for production facilities, and in my case clients usually request multiple formats and languages. For me this has typically been doing a video version of any interactive items since not all employees will have access to a device. Videos can be played for groups during a formal training session or informally played in common areas. Since I usually end up doing English and Spanish, I use Storyline for everything just for ease of translation and the ability to publish into different formats.

Thanks that's really helpful! How would you describe these types of learners in terms of motivation, learning preferences, etc? We don't actually have workers in these factories yet, but we're trying to create some rough personas for them to inform early stages of our design. Also, have you tried using any of the remote support tools or eyewear?

Andrea - here is a link to a VR training for manufacturers using Unity and Oculus headgear. What you will view is a video that we took of ourselves using the software. We also do everything from Studio through 360 within the Articulate family. Drop a note if you have any questions.
