Two Modules in One Course

May 13, 2015

Hello, I'm new to Articulate and hoping someone can help with this. I would like to build a course with two modules. At the onset, I want to offer the participant a choice of taking Module 1 or 2 in any order. At the completion of the module, there is a test. Upon completion of the test, I would like the course to loop back and force the user to move onto the outstanding Module. How would I go about to set this condition?

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You could either use a variable that is set when they select the 'module' they want to do, which is then checked when you send them back to the slide where they select this, and depending on it's value, that slide will send them to the other module.

Or, you could just structure the course differently, you wouldn't need many duplicate slides to do this.

Slide that asks which module sends them to that module

They do the stuff and the test. A variable then has 1 added to it.

The slide with the end of the test then sends them to the other module, if they have completed one test (the variable == 1) or if the variable == 2 they get sent to the Well done! you have completed both modules page!

You can use some variables - if you're new to variables, don't worry, everyone is at some point.

Create two new variables, Module1 and Module2 as true/false variables as "False" being the default. (or numbered, etc. it doesn't really matter, but true/false is probably the easiest).

Then depending on what your criteria is, at the time the criteria is met, set a trigger to change that variable being "true."

For example, if they need to pass the test to do the second one, you could set it so that the variable changes to "true" when the user clicks some button if they passed the exam.

So, now you want them to go back to the original screen if they haven't completed both courses. You can set a button to go back to the original screen "if Module1 OR Module2 are False" - if they're both true, then they can go to a completion screen instead.

However - there are some considerations in doing this:

First, it will make your completion settings that much more complicated if you're showing this in an LMS, especially if they need to "pass" both exams in order to complete the course. You can do it, but it takes some smoke and mirrors.

Second, it's important to consider how long your learners are going to be just sitting at the course taking it. If these are just two quick 5 minute modules, then no worries. But no one likes taking a huge course at the computer :)

If you are putting this in an LMS, it may be cleaner just to make it into two separate courses and just require learners to take both of them.

Midi Prefix/Rachel,

Thank you for the suggestion! I've finished my course and put together a simplified sample to share this with others. If you have a moment, feel free to have a look and let me know if you spot any errors - or if you feel there is an easier way to do this. It definitely took me awhile!

Thank you again!
