Using Articulate to Track Completion of Viewed Videos

May 31, 2016

Greetings everyone,

I am entirely new to the e-Learning world.  I have recently been given a project to upload Lunch & Learn videos into our Academy Portal.  These are LYNC recordings with a simple voice and .ppt presentation.  HELP!  How do I "wrap" these videos in Articulate such that once the learner has completed the video, I can track their completion?  I look forward to learning from you all.  Feel free to send me an email @ Shannon.dearman@worleyparsons.com.  Thank you so much!

Hi Shannon,

Are you using a Learning Management System (LMS)? How are your learners accessing these videos? Essentially, you'll want somewhere to "house" your online materials so that learners can access them.

You can insert videos into Articulate, and you can also convert PPT slides to Articulate slides. Once you publish the Articulate course, your LMS can track completion.

That's a really brief overview. Maybe the tutorials on publishing would help more (https://community.articulate.com/articles/publishing-a-presentation), but feel free to ask any additional questions.

Hi Shannon,

To Laurel's excellent point...   Should we assume that your "Academy Portal" is internal branding of a fully functional LMS that can house standard e-learning?

If so, there are a couple of options...

1) As Shannon points out, simply use something like Articulate Studio (Presenter) to convert the PPT to e-learning slides, and embed the video. Depending on length, it can be good to break up the video into several clips spread across a few slides.

2) If you aren't worried about interactivity, quizzing, look and feel, etc....   A more bare-bones option that many LMSs allow is the direct loading of various "assets" that can be bundled as courses.  Yours may allow you to directly upload the video and PPT separately and link them together so both must be launched to receive "completion" for the course.

Option 1 is far more elegant, and allows both a better learning experience and tracking options... and it's exactly the kind of scenario Articulate Studio was designed for.

Hope this helps!

Laurel and Bob,

I can't thank you enough for your quick and informative reply.

Our Academy Portal interfaces with Skillport, which serves as our LMS.  This is where the online content is essentially housed and accessed through our Academy Portal.

I have looked at the videos to learn how to upload the video file into Articulate, however what I am unclear about is if I need to add a new scene or slide so that learners could click on track the completion.  Is that something I must do before publishing to the LMS?

I'm not familiar with Skillport, but typically the process with most LMS systems is to publish the Articulate file (within Articulate) then upload the Articulate file into your LMS.

You can determine if you want to put the video into either a new scene or a new slide. Most users create scenes that are "bundles" of slides (think about how a movie is made of many scenes, each of which are made of many slides/images).

To break it down to very simple directions, I think what you'll want to do is :

1. Insert your video into Articulate (on a slide, which may be part of a scene if you wish).

2. Publish your Articulate file. When you do this, you can adjust the settings to indicate course completion in any number of ways (i.e. total slides viewed, or quiz passed, etc.)

3. Upload your published Articulate file into your LMS.

4. Use your LMS to track completion. Most LMS systems allow you to view reports of which learners completed which courses, and when, etc.

Let us know if you have any more questions. The Articulate tutorials might also be a good place to start to help you learn the program:  https://community.articulate.com/series/getting-started-with-articulate-storyline-2/articles/getting-started-with-articulate-storyline-2

The program is surprisingly easy to learn, and once you have a grasp on the basics you can really let your creativity flow.

Laurel,

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!  This makes perfect sense as I have been reviewing the tutorials... some several times!  Your simple instruction have helped to fuse what I have learned so far.   I really appreciate all of your help and recommendations with this.  If you don't mind, if I have further questions, I would like to post to this feed.  In the meantime, I'm gonna take off running with what I have learned so far along with your recommendations!

Thank you again!
