Working in instructional design

Jun 23, 2020

Hi,

Currently, I am a teacher and I would like to transition into working as an Instructional Designer. If anyone has helpful information which could send me down the right path it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, Allan,

Because you're a teacher, I assume you already understand the basics of Instructional Design (ID). At least, the Instructor Led Training (ILT) part.

I also assume you want to transition out of teaching in a school setting. But have you considered all of the various corporate and non-profit alternatives for ID? In other words, do want to completely give up presenting and only do ID? Do you want to design ILTs, elearnings, and/or blended options? And, finally, do you want to be a full-time employee or try freelancing?

I highly recommend you investigate organizations related to ID. Those would allow you to network with others in the field to get some guidance. For example, the Association for Talent Development (www.td.org) has chapters across the U.S. Your area may have other local groups.

Good luck!
