Can you tell us a bit more about what happened (or didn't) when you tried to set it up for your Matching Drag and Drop? If possible, it may be helpful to share your .story file here with us as well.
Thanks for sharing your file here, and my apologies, as if your first post I misread that you were using the matching drag and drop, I just thought you were using the freeform drag and drop interaction. Within a matching drag and drop or a word bank style question, the states are not available for use. You could set this question up to look like a matching drag and drop by using creating your own shapes that "lock" together like these and use the freeform drag and drop feature to change the states. For the drop target, you'll want to actually assign it to a transparent shape or a hotspot. I mocked up a quick example (without the state changes) to help you get a sense of what I'm describing.
Also, you're welcome to submit a feature request regarding adding state changes to those question types.

Hi,
Nothing happens when I add the triggers. It seems like the Drag and drop items don't use the same states as regular buttons (etc selected/normal)
I have attached a .story file that shows the problem.
