Fluttering correction

HI, many of you may already know this, (doing my first project) but I ran into a problem I've been able to fix and wanted to share the solution.

I had a slide with several characters, that, when hovered over (through use of layers), provided information.  I was getting a lot of "fluttering" of the images when I previewed it, and discovered it was because the images overlapped.  I fixed this by putting an invisible oval image over each character that did not touch each other, and used those as the triggers vs. the images themselves.  All fixed now.

(fyi, I had first tried doing this in States but was unable to "arrange" images overtop other characters as shown in the Normal State.  This meant some of the "overlay information" was being hidden when it switched states.)

  • Hi Joe! Thanks for posting here in the community and sharing your tips! I’m not sure why the characters are fluttering on hover. We’d love to take a closer look at your file to see what’s going on. Are you able to publicly share your file in this thread? If not, you can privately submit a support case and upload your file there.

      HI Sarah,
I've been able to fix the fluttering, by targeting an image I overlayed on the characters that were the original targets.

I think what was causing it, was I was targeting the character images themselves; since they overlapped each other a little on the slide, it was confusing the computer.

So, what I have setup now, is when the shapes are hovered over, a layer appears with a different image of the character holding a sign with the name of their assigned fund. On those layers, when the characters are clicked the viewer is forwarded to other slides on those funds.

Thanks! It's my first project so a little slow-going as I'm learning, but excited with some of what I"ve been able to add.

      Kind regards,

      Joe

  • That makes sense, Joe! Thanks for sharing your helpful ideas with the community. And best of everything with your first project! I can't wait to see all the cool stuff you create. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out here.

One more thing, it looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email. You may want to pop in and edit out any personal information you don't want to share with the community. Have a great day!

thanks Sarah, I caught that after I hit "send" but have since corrected.  Diving in has certainly helped me learn the software, I'm trying to use as many of the features as possible.  I don't tend to use states too often, more often it's layers.  When would you suggest particularly using states over layers?

Great question, Joe! For me, it really depends on what I'm trying to do. There isn’t necessarily a right way to go about it, but I know it helps to see how others are using these features to save time. Allison LaMotte wrote this helpful article about this very topic that I think is worth reading. It also includes a lot of helpful tips from the community on how they decide when to use one over the other. I hope this collection of ideas helps you decide the best route for your projects.
