Healthcare Education - How do I make it effective and interesting?!
Hi everyone,
I'm an instructional designer who is a recent transplant from the finance industry into the healthcare field. I thought that my experience with banking compliance needs would prepare me well for healthcare compliance but I've been thoroughly humbled while trying to wrap my arms around all of the education that healthcare workers require.
I'm currently working with several SMEs to refresh our online training using Rise and I'm really struggling to make an overwhelming amount of information more engaging and help our employees to actually retain it.
I would really appreciate hearing from fellow healthcare IDs about how you train on the many, many different requirements while also keeping the information concise and engaging.
Hi Emily, A few thoughts/ideas that I have used for healthcare courses I have done to achieve objectives.
- Storytelling and scenario blocks are great, except for the limited character count, which can be frustrating. This link has a character count cheat sheet attached. https://endurancelearning.com/blog/rise-character-counts/
- Case Studies - user input and decision making, process
- Sorting blocks
- Storyline blocks: These afford more leeway/customization, and the creation of dense (complex) yet concise presentation of information, as well as gamification - a plus.
(if mobiles are on the menu - note, SL blocks are not responsive among a few other things to look out for) - Gifs: a great way to draw attention and illustrate key points
- Labeled Graphics: Animated
- Rise Microlearning courses
- Button stacks
- Downloadable Pdfs, job-aids and cheat-sheets...
- Videos
- Podcasts
- Interactive audio stories Interactive Audio Story
- Not to discount the many other blocks available in Rise that can be used creatively to great effect.
Below are links to 2 visually creative Rise courses, there are many more - check out the ELH challenges:
Space
Dog Care Basics
The Rise Templates are also worth taking a look at for ideas/inspiration.Rise TemplatesAnother element I added, to keep a large project of healthcare courses fresh, engaging and to bolster information retention, was to incorporate some minimal graphic design to create flow, grab attention, remind, show process, tie key points together and chunk material...

I Don't work in the healthcare field however, I was an EMT for many years, with a mother that was a nurse. I can tell you there is a lot of training needed and some if not a lot can be boring. I think story telling might help with some gamification.

Storytelling is a great idea, along with some scenarios where they can practice applying what they've just learned.
