Storyline 360 Backup Folders and Files
Thanks in advance. Like most of us, I'm working from home away from the safety of the "network backup" in the office. Which folders and files do I need to back up to be sure I can restore a complete project if my hard drive fails and I need to immediately jump to a new machine while IT does its magic.
Best.
Hi Joseph,
Storyline files should always be saved locally and then backed up to a shared server or network drive once you've closed the file. Typically the default location is within your C drive and a folder labeled My Articulate Projects.
Storyline also creates a backup or temporary site of files in the event of an autorecovery situation. Those files are stored in this folder: %Appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
They will also be labeled as *.tmp files, but you can change the file extension to *.story and open it within Storyline.
If you need any other help, please let us know!

You'll have to talk to Articulate IT to see about Storyline itself. The .story file contains everything your project needs, except for resources you link to. They (and fonts) aren't loaded until you publish.)

Is there a way to change the location of these backup files?

Hi Michelle!
There isn't a way to change the location of the backup or temporary site of files that Storyline creates in the event of an auto-recovery situation. Those files are stored in this folder: %Appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

My issue is that it isn't saving anything to that folder. Or, more accurately, it has saved only 3 files, and I've been working intensively on .story projects for the past couple of months. I do occasionally get prompted to autorecover my file after storyline crashes, and when I accept it it's there, so it must be putting these files somewhere else. The thing is, I want to look for a backup now, and I can't find them. Have searched .story files, but a .tmp just sends my (old) computer spiralling and I have to quit. Any ideas where I might find the autorecover files? I'm using a pc laptop running windows 11, with OneNote.

Perhaps I should have started a new thread?
Hi Karen,
Just to clarify, is your Storyline 360 application not creating temporary files inside the "%Appdata%\Articulate\Storyline" folder? If this is the case, there's a chance that the application might be running into permissions issues since you need administrator rights to write to the temporary folder of Windows. Try repairing your Storyline 360 installation to see if this fixes the behavior for you. The steps in the article include lowering the User Account Control (UAC) level so you may need assistance from your IT team to perform the steps if you are not an admin on your machine.
If the issue persists, please open a case with our support team here to connect with our support engineers.

Would there be any reason why I have quite a bit of these tmp files in the folder you mentioned (i have my settings set to auto-backup every 5 minutes), but my teammates have only one or ZERO tmp files in their folder with the same settings in their storyline?
Hi Adam!
Thanks for reaching out!
Do you typically work off of a network/shared drive, or your local hard drive? We suggest working locally to avoid erratic behavior while authoring in Storyline.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Steven,
We all work on our local hard drive.
