video / movie files in elearning courses

Feb 13, 2013

Hi,

This is an issue i've had across both studio and storyline though it's not an issue with the software... i don't think.

What is the best / most portable / most playable video file format to embed in elearning modules. I've tried mov, mp4, mpeg & wmv files... none of which have played smoothly or consistently across a range of systems, devices, computers etc.

I have in the past converted files to flash and had no issues but as i need my elearning to play across tablets & ipads this is not an option (and my audience is not savvy enough to suggest downloading players and apps like penguin)

Can anyone suggest a portable video file option? Has anyone encountered this difficulty in the past?

cheers

Hey Craig!

If you've included videos in your Articulate content and find that they don't play in your published output, this article outlines the most common reasons. As far as the best file types:

  • The following file formats are natively supported in Storyline:
    • FLV
    • MP4
    • SWF
  • The following file formats will be converted to MP4 when they are imported into Storyline:
    • 3G2
    • 3GP
    • ASF
    • AVI
    • DV
    • M1V
    • M2V
    • M4V
    • MOV
    • MPE
    • MPEG
    • MPG
    • QT
    • WMV
If you're still having trouble, we'd be happy to take a look at your file and see if we notice something specific. You can send us your file here. Thanks!
