This game is incredible! I am dazzled through and through. However, I do have one question. The link labeled, "We’ve made it available for free: download here." on the tutorial page directs us back to this page, so that on both pages, the template is able to be enjoyed but not downloaded. By any chance could you please make your example downloadable?
Either way, thank you again for creating this game and walking us through the process step-by-step. This activity really takes Storyline gamification to the next level! ^_^
Oops looks like I forgot to attach the file! Thanks for pointing that out. It is now available for free on this page, just click on the "download" button. Sorry about that!
This is brilliant, Allison! Thanks so much for the detailed tutorial and for generously providing the .story file. I think my New Year's resolution will be to try and build this game from scratch! Merçi beaucoup!
Hi Luke. This template was created in Storyline 2, so you'll need to have Storyline 2 installed on your computer to open the file. If you don't have Storyline 2, you can download a free trial here: https://www.articulate.com/store/trial-download.php?aid=1
Wonderfully creative template! This design can definitely be used for motivating learners. As I have SL1, what must I consider when developing my own Battleship module? That is, what are the limits of SL1 compared to SL2 regarding these functions?
HI Kyada,
No problem, just follow the step-by-step tutorial here: https://community.articulate.com/articles/blow-your-learners-out-of-the-water-with-this-battleship-e-learning-game/
The only feature here that I know for sure is not available in SL1 is the motion path I used to create the effect where the target swings back and forth in front of the boat on the question slides. Otherwise, as far as I know, the rest of the features are available in SL1 as well. Let me know if you have any issues.
I love this great template. I am new to Articulate so this is a huge help. I am going to work through the template instructions. I noticed that the correct answer is in the same spot on the slides. Is there a reason for this? I know I can change that but will it break something further down the template (results) or is that automatic....
Hi Vanessa! So glad to hear this is helpful to you. The reason the correct answer is always in the same spot is because I just copy/pasted the question slides. You can certainly change the correct answer without it breaking the design. Just open the question, click on Form View and select another option in the left-hand column. Let me know if you have any issues!
Thank you Allison. I ended up figuring it out in Form View as you noted. Can you use the "shuffle" question option too? Just taking a look at that right now as another option to change around answers in this template and my future projects as I get more proficient.
You can shuffle the answers to a given question by choosing that option in "Form View". If you want to shuffle the questions so that the question is selected randomly when they click on a square, you'll need to use a question bank. Click here to learn more about how those work: https://community.articulate.com/series/articulate-storyline-2/articles/creating-and-managing-question-banks
Je vous en prie ! Pour info, j'ai fait une version française ici : http://blogs.articulate.com/les-essentiels-du-elearning/template-storyline-2-learning-game-a-la-bataille-navale/
Thank you so much! I love this :) I do have a question though, when I add my questions, include additional answers and have the answers shuffle - the base slide will automatically change after 5-10 seconds on the correct or incorrect layer. How can I correct this? Thank you :)
it jumps to the next slide in the questions. Completely bypasses the battleship grids. The hit or miss will register but if you do not click on the continue box, you keep getting the questions. Even If you click on the box in the bottom right (the last question slide) first, the slide will jump to the Results slide saying you have lost. It has to be something that I am doing because it doesn't happen if I just play the demo.
Hi Cheryl,
It sounds like you need to update the trigger attached to the continue button on each feedback layer. By default, it is "jump to next slide" but in this case we want it to jump back to the gameboard. See Step 5 in this tutorial for more info: https://community.articulate.com/articles/blow-your-learners-out-of-the-water-with-this-battleship-e-learning-game/
Let me know if you're still seeing the problem after you update the trigger.
THANK YOU!!! I corrected the trigger and extended the timeline. I have been looking at this for a few days trying to figure out why it wasn't working right and it was two little triggers lol -
Hi Alison,
I love this game and I am using it in one of my courses. I have run into a problem with the result slides. I want the user to be able to view the result slides once the quiz is completed and I have set each question to have the Result Slide value set to the relevant Result Slide number in Form view.
When %Results1.ScorePoints% is greater than or equal to %Results1.PassPoints% I can move on to the next slide in the course by clicking the Next button on the last Review slide.
But when %Results1.ScorePoints% is less than %Results1.PassPoints% nothing happens when I click the Next button on the last Review slide and I get stuck on this page.

Aside from this problem, I would also like the user to be able to re-take the battleship quiz but to get a completely new set of questions the second time. How would I be able to do this?
Do I duplicate the whole battleship game (the complete set of slides) and point that quiz result to a new Result Slide? In this case, how do I add up the final score of the course? I want the quiz result to be reset before the user re-takes the quiz and the new result to be the final course result but I also want users that pass the quiz the first time to have their score posted as the final course result.
Or do I add eight new questions in the original battleship game? In this case how do I select which questions to be displayed in the first try and which questions to be displayed in the second try? Again, the scores need to be added up correctly for each game and reset/re-posted if the user re-tries the quiz.
Or is there another way to do this?
Thanks
Annika
Hi Annika,
Glad to hear you like this template and are using it in one of your courses! :)
I'm having a hard time understanding the first issue you're describing, but it sounds like something you may want to open a support case for. Here's a link to the form: http://www.articulate.com/support/contact/submit.php
If you'd like the learner to retake the battleship quiz with different questions then yes you'd have to duplicate the quiz and redirect the learn to that quiz when they click on "retry".
In terms of the score, unfortunately there is no way to say "if they get 80% on either this quiz or that quiz then they pass the course". The only way I can see to make it work would be to check all the questions (in both quizzes) in the results slide and then set the passing score so tha... Expand

The only way I can see to make it work would be to check all the questions (in both quizzes) in the results slide and then set the passing score so that if they pass one OR the other, they will pass. For example, if you had set the passing score to 80% for 1 quiz, you'd have to set it for 40% so that if they pass either one of the quizzes they're still receiving a passing score.
Hope that helps!
This is so awesome! Thanks for this. I think I am going to add sound effects when for spaces with no ships. I am definitely going to add sound effects for the explosions and correct answers.
