Cannot preview presentation

Jul 29, 2011

As a new user of Articulate, I am having issues previewing and publishing my work.  The slide comes up totally blank and my narration will not play.  I have read other posts and checked the tutorials with no luck.  I can play the narration when I enter "record narration" but that's it.  Help!

Hi Lori & welcome to Heroes,

It sounds like you don't have the Flash Player installed.  Please open up Internet Explorer & download the Flash Player by using the link below:

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

After that, restart your computer & try to preview / publish your work again.  If you continue to have problems, please verify that your files are on your local hard drive and not on a network or USB drive.

I don't know if Lori ever got her issue resolved, but I seem to be having a similar issue.  I am running Windows 8 with PowerPoint 2007 32 bit and Articulate Studio '09.

  1. I am having trouble inserting Engage Interactions and publishing the presentation. When I attempt to insert an already existing interaction, I get a DLL loading error.  I have now created one interaction 3 times all with the same result.
  2. When I try to preview my presentation, my template disappears and of course none of the interactions are there.
  3. When I close the attempted published preview, several of my slides turn to blue.
Can anyone help me?

Hi Wendy,

Sounds like the issue is related to more than the interactions, if it's affecting your other presentation slides. However, it's difficult to say without knowing a little more.

First, can you confirm you're working with local project files and using no special characters in the file names, please?

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Thanks!

Thank you for the feedback Christine. Yes I am working on my local drive and using no special characters in the name. I don't think the issue is the naming convention.

Let me provide a little more background.  I purchased a new computer - Windows 8 and it came with PowerPoint 13.  I found out, when I tried to use it with Articulate Studio Pro' 09, that it was not compatible when the Add-in functions did not work. I deleted the 2013 version and installed PowerPoint 2010, 32 bit and had no problems with the Add-ins and everything seemed to work fine, until I tried to to preview the presentation, with the Engage interaction inserted. That is when all the slide prior to the interaction turned blue and my template disappears.

Any more suggestions? Also, does it matter if the version is for Home/School Use?

Hi there Wendy,

Thanks for getting back to me and thanks for the information!

No, the Home/School version shouldn't matter, as long as you're using the 32-bit installation.

Since you've had to make so many changes, I'm wondering it it's corrupted the installation of either Engage or Presenter. Can you please try following the steps outlined in the article below and let me know if you see any improvement, please?

Unexpected or erratic behavior in Articulate Studio '09

I know you've done a lot already, hopefully this will get you up and running.

Thanks, Wendy!

Good morning Wendy,

Thanks for trying that, sorry that it didn't resolve the issue. I had hoped everything worked out.

It's still starting when you attempt to preview the project(s), correct?

Perhaps it's an issue with DPI on the machine. Articulate Studio '09 is only supported with a system DPI setting of 96. If you're using a DPI setting other than 96, you'll encounter erratic behavior in the desktop applications and the published output. The following list provides some examples of unexpected behavior that you may encounter:

*  Elements of the application appear misplaced or distorted.
*  When previewing, content is distorted.
*  The published output is distorted or doesn't display correctly.
*  Annotations are misplaced.
*  Lengthy slide notes won't scroll when recording narration.
*  Your logo doesn't display correctly.
To resolve these issues, change your system's DPI to 96. Here's how:
Presenter '09:
Try that out and see if that fixes the issue. If not, we may need to take a closer look at the system and what's going on.
