Changing voice scripts

Dec 26, 2012

Often when I'm adding narratives to my presentation slides my speaker notes from one slide replace those on the next slide, messing up the script I'm supposed to be reading for that subsequent slide.  How can I ensure that doesn't happen?  It's very frustrating and a time waster.

Hi Mike. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having with this. That does sound strange. I just want to make sure I understand what what's happening. When you're moving to another slide and try to narrate, the notes are pulling from previous slides, correct?

What version of Storyline are you using? Have you installed Update 2, yet? If you are, can you recreate this in a new Storyline file, or is this happening with a specific presentation?

Thanks Mike!

What are you doing working on Boxing Day??? Thanks for the reply though!  I'm not using Storyline, but rather Presenter '09.  Is Storyline a new version of the program I'm using.

You are correct about my problem.  I'm adding narrative to a presentation of a few hundred slides.  I've got the speaking points in the notes portion of each PowerPoint slide.  Being the rookie narrator that I am, I often re-narrate a slide a couple of times before I'm satisfied.  For some reason when I hit the record button the slide switches to the next one and replaces the notes I have prepared for it with the notes that I'm recording.  When I finish recording and go back to the correct slide the voice is recorded on the correct slide, but when I go to the forward slide the picture is correct, the written narrative has changed and nothing has been recorded for it; however, my speaking points are gone.

Hi again Mike,

Don't worry - my vacation days are coming soon! Pete is off this week

I don't know why I thought you were using Storyline, I apologize for that. I see now that it's Presenter. Must've been from all the turkey from the holidays!

Thanks for the additional information, too :) It does sound strange, though. Are all of the presentation files on your hard drive? Make sure any files you work with (editing, saving, etc) are local. If you try to work with files that are on a network drive, USB drive, or any other external sources, it can cause a some odd behavior.

If you're certain the content is all local, we may need to take a closer look at the files. If you can, please submit the files to us in a support case. Also, if you can, please include a Presenter Package with a presentation that has encountered this problem, so we can test it. If you do submit a case, please share the details with me so I can follow the progress and post the solution.

Thanks again, Mike!

I keep the master file on our network server as we sometimes have more than 1 person accessing it.  I'll try moving it to my hard drive and see if that fixes it; the problem crops up quite often, so I'll know whether it's fixed or not fairly soon.  Any upgrades on the way to make working from a server more reliable?

Hi Mike,

That's really the case for editing any type of files. However, when you're working with it in this type of environment, it's a little more noticeable.

Here's some more official information, if you'd like to take a look:

If you are experiencing unexpected issues using Articulate software, here are some tips for managing your files which can help prevent issues.

1.  Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.

2. You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).

3.  Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.
