Insert video getting active x error - Studio 13, ppt office 13

Jan 27, 2016

Hi,

When I try to embed a video file into articulate studio I get a message saying my active x MS office settings aren't right. I have followed the knowledge base article but no luck.

So I have checked the settings in powerpoint, uninstalled and reinstalled adobe flash, done a repair on office, reinstalled studio. I have tried creating a brand new ppt file and putting the video in. Tried a different video. Tried creating a flash version of the video and inserting flash object.

I have contacted my IT people, then the Omniplex people in the UK and they don't know.

My colleague in the US (I am in the UK) is now having the same problem with a slightly different build of Studio (she is on 13 v 6, I am on 13 v 7).

If anyone has seen this before and found a solution I would be very, very grateful. At this point I am a bit stuffed as I need to embed 3 .mp4 files into a presentation for my boss and am baffled.

Two other pieces of info...

1. I have done this successfully in the past.

2. If I just use ppt > insert > video it works, but then when I publish it in articulate it is just a still image with no player. So I know the video is ok.

Help!!

Sam

Hi,
Thanks for replying, yes that information was my starting point as that is the exact error I am getting.
I did all the steps listed.

I have tried again this morning after repairing office, reinstalling studio, new ppt and new video (wmv this time) and same error.

Sam

Hi, Samantha -- Many thanks for your response and sorry to hear that issues persist! Would it be possible for you to share your file here so that I am able to see if I can reproduce the error on my end? Please click on the grey ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom left of the reply box over here in the thread, and you can then upload from there.

If privacy is a concern, here is the form you'll need to submit your file for confidential review offline. :)

Christie,

Thanks for the follow up. I downloaded Leslies package (thanks Leslie) and it works ok on my machine (I can preview it), however if I try to edit it (right click on video and go to object>edit it gives me an error saying can't create active X controls.

Today I removed studio completely from my machine, repaired office, rebooted and reinstalled studio from scratch, checked ppt active X settings. Same error.

Bizarrely I can create an engage interaction and add video there, but not directly into my ppt slides. If you have any more suggestions or can check with any developers on anywhere else active X things get referenced, I would be really grateful.

Hello Bram and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Looks like we were not able to recreate Samantha's issue here. I do not see where she reached out to our team for further assistance here and this thread is a bit dated.

Have you tried to repair your software as well?

Would you be able to share your Articulate Package for us to take a look as well as the mp4?

Same problem here. I am using a fresh install of Studio 13 update 9 on latest Windows 10 with latest PowerPoint Office 365.

When trying to import the video, it shows up just fine in the preview window where you can set the options, it even plays there, but when I press OK in that window I just get that notorious...

"The selected video could not be inserted into the presentation. Please ensure your Office ActiveX settings are compatible with Articulate Presenter. Learn more about Office ActiveX settings"

...error message. I have followed the recommendations on your page, I have even selected "Enable all controls" and also unticked the "Safe Mode" checkbox.

Strange that this hasn't been solved in so long time...

Hello Stefan and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Sounds like you are running into an issue we've recently identified:

Inserting video files in Presenter '13 (when using Microsoft Office 2016/365) results in the ActiveX error

We have this logged as a possible bug. Our team is looking into next steps, and you are in the right place for updates.

If anyone is using a different version of Microsoft Office, please let us know!

To add, we've just documented a workaround for inserting videos into Presenter '13 with Office 365 / PowerPoint 2016.  These steps will resolve that error while we're working on a fix for Presenter.

Chris, we never want you to feel like you have to pay for a fix.  Can you try those steps in the article and let me know if that helps?  We're happy you can use Articulate 360, as long as it doesn't feel forced.

Is there any indication as to when this fix will be available.  We have some tight deadlines for a number of training modules for our client incorporating MP4 videos and cannot get past this issue with Microsoft 365.  We are a small two person business and cannot yet afford the luxury of Articulate 360.  Help us out please Articulate!
