Sometimes hyperlink goes to the wrong slide

Apr 04, 2011

The Situation:

I have developed a WBT on the prevention of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse of organizational resources.  On Slide 4 I give the learner the option to choose which of these topics to view first.  Slide 4 has a Fraud hyperlink that goes to slide 5; a Waste hyperlink to slide 12 and an Abuse hyperlink to slide 15.  I published the training to a shared drive that other trainers can get to for testing before this goes to a wider audience for further testing and then onto the intranet as a training course.

The Problem:

When one of the other trainers clicks on the Waste button or on the Abuse button, he is often taken to slide 7 instead.  At other times, he is taken correctly to slide 12 or 15, depending on his selection.  The hyperlinks have been more than triple checked.  I can find nothing unusual about the properties of slide 7.  The problem does not happen to me on my computer.  The randomness of the problem adds to the frustration.  Any ideas as to how to fix this problem?

Hi Roy & welcome to Heroes,

I'm not exactly sure why this is happening.  Is it possible the end-user is seeing a cached version of the file?  If so, have them clear their cache to see if that resolves the issue.

Thanks for your suggestions.  When nothing worked, I just took out the slides with the hyperlink options and made the presentation more linear; learn about fraud, then waste, etc.  That solved the problem.  Interestingly, hyperlinks on other slides going to various web pages on our intranet and to the Internet have all worked all the time.  I also tried deleting the troublesome slide 7 and rebuilding it in the event that it had some hidden property that was creating the problem.  That didn't fix the problem either.  Enough time wasted on this anomaly.  I'll try building in these kinds of options in another presentation.

Thanks again for taking the time to make your suggestions.

Actually, I have the same problem and it is very annoying and tme-consuming. I develop an education in different languages, and when re-using the "first" language and making the adaptions, some of the hyperlinks refer to the wrong slides. I have deleted them, inserted new ones and checked them in power point. Please help!

We would really need to look at your project files to figure out what's going on. I would suggest that if anyone encounters this issue, they should submit a case so we can help you out:

I am also having this same issue. I have added a button (image) to the bottom of the slides for navigation, forwards and backwards. The Forwards button works all of the time. Some slides the back button takes you right back to the beggining, and i've checked the hyperlink several times and it IS set to 'previous slide'. Tested in PPT and it is fine, but once published always the same issue!! My slides are only numbered 1-113 so naming cannot be the issue, has anyone gotten to the bottom of this?? It is really annoying. HELP!
