Strange behavior with anchor links after IE 10 update

May 08, 2013

Hi

We were prompted that there was an MS update today, so  we did it and it installed IE10. We had IE9 as the default browser before that.

After the reboot, all of our ppt links that contained anchors started to become mysteriously rewritten when clicked-on in ppt; the pound was replaced with blank-hyphen-blank; for example,

qmc:bks#qmc000_17_elvl

became

qmc:bks%20-%20qmc000_17_elvl

After about an hour of troubleshooting (and yes, freaking out) it became evident that this problem did not occur on any other browser after it was set to the default (IE8, IE9, Chrome, Firefox); we de-installed the update, and now all is well.

I'm just posting this in case it might help some one else. And, also, if someone is able to tell me what's going on here with the links being rewritten, I'd love to know.

Technical details: Win 7 x64, Office 10 x32, Articulate 9 with update 9; and ... IE 9

Hi there Richard. Welcome to the community!

This is the first I've heard of this. Thanks very much for sharing the information, hopefully it'll help anyone else that runs into this problem.

Do you happen to know which update was installed that caused this? I'm wondering if Microsoft is aware and if they've posted any details on this issue.

I'm currently running Windows 8 and there was an update today, but the only one I see for Windows-specific updates is related to Windows Defender. I'm curious to see if the update is specific to Windows 7.

Thanks!

good point.

this update might not have been posted today; it was simply that we proceeded with the update action today--i think it might be the  general IE 10 install that MS announced they would start offering to Win7 users a while back.

here is a snap from the user's system that describes the update in question.

Hi Richard,

Ahhh-hah! That makes sense. Thanks very much for sharing that information.

I don't use Internet Explorer often, if I can help it, which is probably why I haven't noticed the update.

Thanks again for posting this - I'm going to do some research and see if I can find any information from Microsoft regarding this update.
